2nd Trimester

Energy Drinks

Good morning!

I’m 12 and 2 today and starting to feel more severe fatigue as I approach my second trimester. I have not had any caffeine since I found out I was pregnant. Pre-pregnancy, I hated the taste of coffee but occasionally drank a sugar-free Alani energy drink when I needed a boost.

I’ve heard up to 200mg caffeine per day is safe in pregnancy. It seems like a small cup of coffee is acceptable, but an energy drink with the same caffeine content isn’t considered safe.

So, what do you guys think? Could I drink a little of my energy drink? I likely wouldn’t finish a can (usually a third of a can, so around 70g caffeine is enough for me). Would the other ingredients in an energy drink be harmful?

Definitely wouldn’t be an all-the-time thing, just exhausted and feeling a little desperate today.

Thank you!

Re: Energy Drinks

  • I personally wouldn't do it, unless you're confident in ALL the ingredients in your drink. There can be unexpected things in energy drinks. If today is especially exhausting, try for a nap. Honestly, even a 5 minute nap may give you more/better energy. I know for me, caffeine comes with a crash, a brief nap may give me just enough to power through for a couple more hours.

  • Didn’t end up indulging! I think I would’ve been too worried about the potential effects.
  • I drink Pure boost energy packets, ingredients are good! I buy them off Amazon.
