6 week old not sleeping well daytime naps

My 6 week old is struggling to sleep well during the daytime around 8am-10 p. He keeps waking up every 20 min or so once he takes his nap. Sometimes he will self soothe himself otherwise I will have to put him back to sleep. I’m not sure why this keeps happening. It’s hard to do anything during the day because he keeps waking up.

Re: 6 week old not sleeping well daytime naps

  • Totally normal. Baby relies on you to help soothe him by nature. Try to make sure you aren’t mistaking active sleep for awakening as well. My five week old grunts and makes all kinds of noises in her sleep. I only pick her up if she’s got eyes wide open and is clearly fussing/crying. If baby isn’t crying, it’s ok to see if he/she will go back to sleep themselves and isn’t “cry it out.” I have some luck this way, especially at night.

Also, 20 minute naps still count! It’s frustrating but also normal. Babies this little don’t have monster naps all the time.

If you want to try to get a good longer nap, try a car ride, stroller ride, or baby carrier (within safe guidelines ). Each has built in soothing.
