High-Risk Pregnancy

Opioids and Autism

I’m kind of in a spiral right now.

My 4 year old is on the spectrum, my 3 year old is not.

I have severe lower back issues and have been under the care of a pain management specialist. I am pregnant with #3. Before I found out I was pregnant, I was trying to get insurance to approve a minimally invasive SI joint fusion procedure but now have to wait.

Under the direction and monitoring of a maternal-fetal-medicine specialist, I was prescribed opioids during my pregnancies. Relatively low dose.

Both kids were healthy at birth and did not have withdrawal symptoms.

Have been taking the same meds this pregnancy for about a month.

Just came across a bunch of articles about studies that show an increased risk of ASD in children who were exposed to opioids in-utero. Not to mention the Tylenol on top of that.

I am a wreck. I feel like I caused my 4 year old’s autism. And now I’m afraid I’ve done the same to my unborn child. I just threw away my prescription because I’d rather be in severe pain than live with the fact I potentially did this.

I have been an emotional wreck all day.

Re: Opioids and Autism

  • Do not worry. I took opioids for the first 6 months of my first pregnancy and as of right now my kid is normal. By the way I was overtaking, ibuprofen and hydrocodone for pain. I did not know I was pregnant and there's a lot of other things that you're not supposed to do during pregnancy with eating wrong type of food and drinking. My child is 5 years old and is perfectly normal. These studies are not always correct and a lot of times they are biased.
They are just finding about what causes autism. Right now. I've seen so many different types of things that cause autism in studies. It seems like they're guessing because it's the new thing to research.
