Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Overdue baby

Hey guys! So my baby girl Eden arrived at 42weeks and she is currently hitting milestones of a 1 month old baby, e.g. sucking hands, being very alert, lifting her head and the one I am hoping to get some advice on is sleeping through the night.

She has been sleeping 5-6 hours every night and last night it was 7 hours!

Should I treat her development as that of a 4 week old as she was overdue by 2 weeks or should I wake her for night feedings as you would a 2 week old?

She is gaining healthy weight and eating well.

Re: Overdue baby

  • Definitely wake to feed! 7 hours is way too long for a child that age, so is 5-6, really. Depending on whether you're breastfeeding or formula feeding, she should be eating every 2-3 hours (for breastfeeding) or a little longer for formula (ask your doctor for how long). Even though she had an "extra" 2 weeks in the womb (though you don't know for sure the conception date unless you did IVF, so it's possible the dates were off), she's still only had 2 weeks of using her stomach, so it's still tiny. And in general, we don't adjust for age for overdue babies the same way we do for premature babies, so you'll always be looking at her birth date rather than her EDD for development.

  • I would consult w her pediatrician. I’ve heard that once they hit /surpass their birth weight you don’t need to wake them anymore. Maybe she’s getting enough milk during the day. I wouldn’t be worried especially if she’s peeing/pooping enough and her weight is good. But I would go with her doctors advice!
