Babies: 0 - 3 Months

My baby is not latching

Since the beginning I was worrying a lot about if I had milk or no … since I had a breast augmentation 1.5 years ago … my baby lost a lot of weight after birth and she was gain it weight very slow… I wanted to be breastfeeding exclusive but all the people telling me that my baby was crying because she was hungry and me worrying about the procedure that I had in the past … I started pumping to see how much milk I had .. and I have milk But the issue now is that she doesnt want to latch again 🥺 now she only wants the bottle

Re: My baby is not latching

  • Meet with a lactation consultant who can help you figure out how to help baby latch. Breast augmentation does not mean you won't be able to exclusively breastfeed.

  • Hi @anahernandez_93
Have you tried meeting with a lactation consultant or using a nipple shield? I have met with a consultant four times since my daughter was born five weeks ago and found it very helpful. We also had one come to our house, not sure if you have any services like that available near you but it may be worth looking into. I found it reassuring because she was able to see how we are really doing things in our home. Either way, don’t give up if you don’t want to! There are resources and supports to help. But whatever you decide will be best for you and baby :)

I am dealing with similar (had the augmentation 21 years ago only don’t produce enough milk to satisfy my baby). Because of concerns with her nutrition ( born three weeks early) we had a three part plan right from the hospital. We tried latching first, then formula and pump. My baby prefers the formula and while the pediatrician says breast is best they also said the most important thing is that she is gaining weight, so while I would prefer to breast feed, it is minimal compared to what she is getting with formula.
  • Early bottlefeeding can lead to nipple confusion, that's probably what's happened. Because baby bottles and breasts look and feel different than your baby might only recognize a bottle with food and not your breasts. A lactation consultant can help you with fixing that. I woul recommend switching to spoon feeding or syringe feeding so they don't only associate food with a bottle. You can also try hand expressing a little bit of milk before trying to get them to latch or using a bottle to get them to open their mouth and then putting your breast in instead. I do highly recommend getting an appt with a lactation consultant though.
