Back to work- BF and bottles

Going back to work soon and worried about overfeeding baby during the day with bottles. I had read to divide 30 oz (amount of breast milk consumed in 24 hours) divided by number of feedings (9) so baby should get bottles with a little over 3 oz each feeding. Does this sound correct? Or any other suggestions? I plan to pump at work and want to keep bf as long as I can.

  • General guidelines are 1-1.5 ounces per hour you are away from baby. You can make up 3 ounce bottles for feeding about every three hours and include a couple extra ounces frozen or fresh to top off as needed. As baby gets older they will probably bump up to 4-5 ounce bottles every 3-4 hours. Hope this helps!

  • My baby usually takes 2-3 ounces per bottle, which seems less than others I know using formula but he's not going hungry. I leave extra fresh or frozen. When I freeze, I try to do 1 and 2 ounce portions so if he needs a little extra we aren't wasting. Honestly, the first few weeks as the caregiver gets to know baby's eating habits are super stressful (or they were for me) but you'll see patterns emerge. I pump at work and ebf when with baby. I was successful with my 1st son and going strong with baby #2.
