2nd Trimester

Plus Size in T2

I wanted to start a discussion thread for issues specific to being in your second trimester in a fat/larger/plus size body.

I’m at the end of week 14. Today I have an ultrasound for viability because in my last two check-ups with my midwives, they couldn’t find a fetal heart beat. I wonder how likely it is that the trouble finding fetal tones has to do with being in a larger body and/or limitations of medical instruments for fat patients. I’ve also read that 12 and 14 weeks is still early to check for fetal tones as I think that usually happens around 15 weeks. But who knows, this is my first time. I haven’t had any signs that something is writing or has changed with my pregnancy… So it’s confusing.

Other things coming up are how to dress a plus size pregnant body. When will I start really showing? When will I need bigger clothes? Where do I get plus size maternity or nursing bras for large breasts?

Sleeping positions are also hard because my chest is very large and I have carpal/cubital tunnel syndromes. Side sleeping causes my breasts to nearly suffocate me. Lol. And also pinches my nerves more. The result is that I toss and turn all night and barely get any sleep.

I’m sure there will be more…

I would love to know how other plus size folks in T2 are fairing. Are you getting good, affirming care? What resources have been helpful for you? How have you overcome any challenges with weight bias in the medical industry? Etc etc.

Re: Plus Size in T2

  • I don't know if it would help, but they make this breast pillow (to prevent wrinkles) used while sleeping. It may help to alleviate some of that chest pressure.

I have a few plus size friends and truthfully, they never really shower too much. I believe by the end they had both actually lost weight. I can recall one telling me how sad it made her that she never showed the traditional way.

The earliest I've heard a heartbeat was 8 weeks, I'm sure people have heard them earlier. I would assume something similar that it's harder to find. I remember my pal telling me the same. She had more US because of it. A definite perk. I love peeping at baby. So ask for more of those to ease your nerves and reassure you.

Sleeping with one of those slanted pillows so you can angle sleep sitting up more may also help. Best of luck!!!
