1st Trimester

hCG not rising as it should?

Hey all,
I'm hoping to get some reassurance, hear some positive stories OR even get some advice.
I got my hCG tested on 9 February (5w4d) and it came back 8,000.
I got my hCG tested again today, 19 February (7w) and it was only 13,000.
The hospital seemed a bit concerned that it wasn’t doubling as it should.
I go back on Tuesday to get more bloods done.
I’m trying stay hopeful but it isn’t looking too good at this stage as my gestational sac only grew 3mm in 8 days.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced this before and what the outcome was?
Thank you xx

Re: hCG not rising as it should?

  • HCG is supposed to double every 48 hours.  That is the only thing the number is good at measuring.  If you're taking it more than 48 hours apart, the numbers can be practically useless.  They number stops doubling and flattens out somewhere around 7 weeks or so, when you start hearing a heartbeat and that is then used for the measurement.

If they did an ultrasound and saw a sac, checking on how far it is growing is probably the best estimate.  Did they say how many 'days' the 3mm sac growth was equivalent of (i.e. if it growing 3mm in a week is standard growth, then you are fine, and I will go with that.  If they say it should have grown like 8mm in a week, then I could see the worry).

    Good luck.

  • Unfortunately, I have a history of miscarriages so went for a follow up US on Thursday, 16 February (when I was supposedly 6w4d) there was still no fetal pole or heartbeat, and the GS was measuring just under 6weeks; hence the blood test.
I read that the GS is supposed to increase in size by at least 1mm per day.
Will go for another blood test tomorrow and scan later this week to see if both the GS and my hCG have increased but at this stage, it looks like another miscarriage x
  • @p0tato3 Sorry for your losses and that this one doesn't look good either.  I've been through RPL hell before and it sucks.

  • Mine was 6219 when I found out. 48 hours later it was only 7134. They said after 6000 it doesn’t always double in 48 hours. I had an ultrasound at 8 weeks and baby has a heart beat (it was 171) and no issues!
