Cystic Fibrosis

Hello!

My OB called yesterday requesting my husband be tested to see if he’s a carrier for CF. My blood work came back positive that I’m a carrier. With that said, this is my second pregnancy and 5 years ago when the same doctor tested me the results were negative. My husband was not tested then since my results were negative. The nurse I spoke with confirmed my test from 5 years ago was negative but explained that since then the test is more advanced and screens for more mutations. My first child does not have CF.

So now I’ve spent the last 24 hours in a panic worrying what if my husband is a carrier also. Has this happened to anyone else between pregnancies? The only thing keeping me somewhat calm is knowing I’ve always been a carrier just totally unaware during my last pregnancy.

Re: Cystic Fibrosis

  • @gp4 oof. That sounds incredibly stressful. My understanding is that CF is very rare even if you both are carriers. I happen to be a carrier for a rare autoimmune disease that my sister has and its thankfully never come into play with our children yet. Like you said, it's always been true even if you're just finding out now! I would try to take it as a good sign that your first child does not have CF, and if you can, ask your doctor for more information about what concerns they have and what the likely/potential outcomes are. That doesn't make it less nervewracking though - we don't have any experience with this specifically, but we did just recently get some potentially bad news about my pregnancy as well so I totally get it. I will highly, highly suggest you avoid Dr. Google until you can talk more with your provider. I made a big mistake googling something my midwife had said to me, but I misunderstood her and completely freaked myself out. My biggest advice is to just make sure you're equipped with everything you can be from your provider before you start looking into any statistics/research/second opinions - which, don't get me wrong, is a great thing to do, knowledge is power (and calm) for many!
