1st Trimester

No heartbeat at 8 weeks

I’m 9 weeks tomorrow and 3 days ago I had bright red blood for a couple hours with no pain or cramping. My blood work showed my hcg was high. ER doctor said most likely a hemorrhage which he said is common.

The next day I had my first ultrasound and they couldn’t detect a heartbeat. I’ve had no bleeding or cramping or pain. My pregnancy symptoms are still strong-sore breasts, nausea, frequent urinating. My doctor said most likely I’m having a miscarriage and that I must have lost the baby within 24 hrs. She ordered another blood test today (72 hrs after my last blood draw) to see if my hcg is going up or down.
Has this happened to anyone? No heartbeat but then one was detected later? Or having a miscarriage with light bleeding but no pain and then no bleeding or pain or any miscarriage symptoms for 3+ days? I’m a wreck.

Re: No heartbeat at 8 weeks

  • It does sound like a miscarriage, possibly a "missed miscarriage". I'm so sorry 😔

  • Yes, I did twice (bled then stopped, then no heartbeat few days later). The bleeding was related to a hemorrhage and not the miscarriage. I required a D&C twice. I’ve had hemorrhages with 4/5 pregnancies, including the one I am carrying now, and it’s very distressing.

If the doc suspects the heartbeat stopped recently, that likely means the baby was measuring right for your gestational age. Unfortunately by 9 weeks a heartbeat should be very detectable. I’m so sorry.
