My Step Son wont sleep alone

Hi! My step son refuses to sleep alone. My husband currently lays down with him and wait for him to go to sleep before coming to bed. Sometimes this takes a couple hours! Help!! We both want him to sleep in his own bed like a big boy as he is 8, but his mom is not on board and sees no issue with him sleeping with her. We are wanting to have more kids and only have a queen size bed which is VERY SMALL if he climbs in with us in the middle of the night. We aren’t gaining any progress. I would love some advice. We have him 2 nights a week so 5 he is sleeping with him mom, and I see no sign of that changing.
