What are you eating (or not)?

Just curious how everyone's diets have changed, if at all?

- are you eating the same as before you found out?
- are you just cutting out the recommended foods (ie. Sushi, alcohol, soft cheeses, etc)?
- has your diet completely changed?
- are you having any cravings already? If so, are you indulging in them? If yes, do you eat what you're craving or a healthy substitution?
- are you feeling too gross with morning sickness to eat?
- if this isn't your first child, did you eat differently between each pregnancy? If so, how different?

My husband and I are being overly cautious since our last successful IVF cycle ended in miscarriage with unknown cause, so I've been looking up every ingredient to see if it's pregnancy safe and we've been cooking healthy pregnancy meals with all the pregnancy super foods. I feel a little guilty when I eat white rice since brown is healthier but that probably won't change. Hoping to keep this up until wk12 but it's hard with all the holiday junk still in the house and my sweet tooth! I do eat half a lindt ball every day. Curious how crazy everyone else is going with their diets!

Re: What are you eating (or not)?

  • Hi there. I’ve been trying to eat more whole foods overall. I’m actually feeling a bit overwhelmed because some of the information seems contradictory. Like I’ve read ginger tea is safe, but licorice root is not and that’s often an ingredient in ginger tea.

  • We eat mostly vegan/ wfpb so don’t plan to change much. I did drink a fair amount of tea. I cut out caffeine but it still makes me nervous, so I might just do one cup a day or water. When morning sickness hits I don’t want tea anyway. Dreading the ms, it’s been worse each pregnancy.
  • Cutting out alcohol before NYE was not fun lol but definitely stopped once I found out the good news on 12/27! Still Reading a lot of the do’s and don’ts. Added the prenatal vitamins. Doing More cooking and less eating out. Cutting down on coffee and drinking more tea.

Haha we were between our embryo transfer and our test during Christmas so my sister's and sister in law were calling me boring for not drinking during the holidays! Fingers crossed they didn't catch on, but they've all been wondering when we were going to try so I'll bet they all suspect something!

I forgot to mention caffeine in my initial post - I used to drink 1 or 2 cups of coffee and/or tea a day and stopped after our transfer - I'll probably have a caffeine free tea here and there or a coffee once a month maybe. I don't drink it for the caffeine so decaf works for me. It's more about the sugar which I'm keeping under 30g a day now.
  • I’ve got to admit, it’s really stressful knowing what you can and can’t eat! I’m only 4 weeks along if that and googling everything. It seems like majority of things are off limits. But, I’ll do whatever it takes for a healthy baby.
  • With my first, I had stopped everything in preparation for our transfer, ate an anti inflammatory diet, etc,
This one was a surprise. Caffeine is the hardest to get rid of. My doc said 200mg or less a day is fine, so Im trying to cut back and may try to start half decaf.
  • It's my second pregnancy, and I don't plan on cutting back as much as the 1st. In general I'm eating healthier. I'm cutting back on higher mercury fish and eating more salmon. I switched up my usual sushi for tempura shrimp rolls. Eating salads for lunch daily. I don't plan to stop eating deli meat (not having sandwiches was the toughest thing my first pregnancy). I'm only cutting back on caffeine to zero-1 cup of coffee daily from 1-2 cups. Cutting out alcohol almost completely. Honestly the toughest thing to give up is ibuprofen lol. I use ibuprofen for headaches and body aches, but now have to switch to tylenol which simply doesn't work as well.
  • My advice would be not to stress over it, especially to the point where it’s all you think about! My SIL did that her first pregnancy and the exact opposite her 2nd, and both boys were completely healthy pregnancies and babies…the 2nd pregnancy was just more enjoyable! I didn’t really restrict myself too much during my 1st pregnancy either and my daughter is physically and mentally developmentally perfect. Soft cheeses are fine as long as they’re pasteurized, small amounts of tuna are allowed (I forget exact amounts, check Google), “cooked” sushi is perfectly acceptable, try to warm lunch meat when possible but the chances of it causing any harm are still small, etc. I try to increase my water intake and do limit myself to 1-2 caffeinated drinks a day, I also try to be mindful of the amount of fast/processed foods I’m eating, but I definitely give it to the random pizza or potato craving! As my doctor reminded me, women have been giving birth since the dawn of time, largely without restrictions (I mean, they used to drink and smoke while pregnant!) and the human race is still thriving…healthy pregnancies that are supposed to make it to term typically do, and if a loss is suffered, it is almost NEVER because of anything you did wrong, especially because of anything you ate. Try to relax and enjoy the journey!
  • I miss tuna already. 😔
  • Trying to eat healthy (I’m a dietitian too, so I know all the right things lol), but all I want is carbs 😅
  • I’m not cutting much out other than alcohol… I will probably not have raw meat/eggs but that’s about it. I will still have my steak rare. Im more concerned with meds so I will try not to take any meds if not necessary..
  • Trying to just eat healthy! I haven’t cut anything out yet, but once the sickness kicks in, I know I will have food aversions to stuff soon enough :(
