1st Trimester

Covid

I had a weird tickle in my throat at the beginning of the week that felt like the onset of a cold but it never really got better and never really got worse. Thew up on Tuesday and had a headache, but I assumed those were related to the pregnancy. Yesterday I developed a mild, random cough so I took a Covid test on a whim and it’s positive. I am vaccinated but not boosted; I feel pretty good overall and am actually shocked the test is positive. That said, I am worried about the baby; I am13 weeks today. Should I be concerned abt Covid impacting my pregnancy? Any reports of birth defects, learning/developmental delays, etc from having Covid in early pregnancy? Trying (unsuccessfully) not to feel worried and anxious abt it 😵‍💫

Re: Covid

  • I had COVID twice in my first trimester before I was eligible for the booster. I took Paxlovid the first time. Definitely contact your doctor, but I was told the baby would be fine and the worry is more for the mother as the symptoms could put you in the hospital. Im still pregnant so I can’t confirm anything 100%, but all of my tests and scans have been fine.
  • I got covid when I was only 5 weeks. This was back when there were no boosters. My OB recommends going on baby aspirin (which I already was) and had me get a couple 3rd trimester growth scans as there's some evidence that covid causes IGR. Baby was totally on track and healthy when he was born!

  • I'm 35 weeks now and got COVID at 12 weeks. I was boosted but it had been more than 6 months since my shot, and I got fairly sick and had a fever for 5 days. I was also advised to go on baby aspirin for the remainder of my pregnancy (which I was already on for a blood disorder anyways). I was instructed to have more growth scans (which I needed to have anyways because my baby has a VSD), and starting next week, I have to do fetal monitoring twice a week (two non-stress tests and one ultrasound each week).

So far, I haven't had any complications or issues (knock on wood) with this pregnancy. The VSD is minor and unrelated (probably genetic since my older child has one too).

I'm also worried about long-term effects on development, etc., but I know Googling it will just make me feel anxious and anyways what will be will be.
  • I had Covid at 10 weeks pregnant and other than feeling like garbage for a couple days, it was nbd. I’m not vaccinated and my baby is a happy and healthy 3 month old now. I would suggest just calling your doctor to let them know and ask about the baby aspirin. It seems vaccinated women have been directed to take it while unvaccinated have not.
