1st Trimester

Iron in first trimester of pregnancy

Hello,

I am pregnant and currently in the 10th week and 3 days.
My first trimester blood results ( 6 weeks ago) were not indicating any anemia: Hematocrit 35.6% and Hemoglobin 12.2/dl

Unfortunately last weekend I fainted and as a precaution after the event, I took an iron pill 50mg elemental iron (Ferrous Gluconate).
Now I'm asking if taking iron can be a problem for the baby as it is in the first trimester.

Should I be worried about it ? I know that a lot of people take iron supplements, but right now I very stressed out about it.

Thank you.

It was one pill. Believe your OB. Internet strangers can’t give you a better answer than your own provider who knows you and specializes in this.

I know it’s hard to relax but if you over analyze every little thing you will drive yourself nuts this whole pregnancy. I hope your fainting spell is one and done.

Re: Iron in first trimester of pregnancy

  • You should discuss any medications or supplements you wish to take with your OB. Iron supplements aren’t a magic pill where you take one after a fainting spell and all is well. Red blood cell turnover and production is a very complex process of which iron stores are a component. Your OB can advise you if you need iron supplementation or not, which is more than one dose. The most important question is did you call or get checked out for fainting and discuss the medication you took with your OB? If not, you definitely should. There are many potential causes of fainting. Good luck.

  • Yes, I've called, got checked and the baby is perfectly safe.
The OB said we should wait 2 more weeks until the end of the trimester and check all the points at that time.

I know that any supplementation needs to be discussed with the OB, but at that time I was just scared and the OB did not had any time available in the weekends while I was still dizzy and I decided to just take 1 iron pill. After taking that pill I was well again.

But know I'm just asking myself if I made a mistake by taking that 1 iron pill.

Maybe I'm just overreacting or something...
  • @Wishilivedinflorida , thank you for your answer. Do you think that it could be a problem if I just took 1 pill ?

What did the provider say when you got checked out? That would be the person to ask, not on a forum. I’m not an OB or a pharmacist or your provider to know your personal history. If you didn’t mention it and it’s driving you this nuts, call and ask.

He said that it is not a problem, because it was just 1 pill and iron it is not bad if taken throughout the pregnancy, but I was just looking for a second opinion on this as I've heard multiple things about it suggesting that iron in first trimester is not good unless there is anemia present.
