Hello,
I am pregnant and currently in the 10th week and 3 days.
My first trimester blood results ( 6 weeks ago) were not indicating any anemia: Hematocrit 35.6% and Hemoglobin 12.2/dl
Unfortunately last weekend I fainted and as a precaution after the event, I took an iron pill 50mg elemental iron (Ferrous Gluconate).
Now I'm asking if taking iron can be a problem for the baby as it is in the first trimester.
Should I be worried about it ? I know that a lot of people take iron supplements, but right now I very stressed out about it.
Thank you.
Re: Iron in first trimester of pregnancy
The OB said we should wait 2 more weeks until the end of the trimester and check all the points at that time.
I know that any supplementation needs to be discussed with the OB, but at that time I was just scared and the OB did not had any time available in the weekends while I was still dizzy and I decided to just take 1 iron pill. After taking that pill I was well again.
But know I'm just asking myself if I made a mistake by taking that 1 iron pill.
Maybe I'm just overreacting or something...
> What did the provider say when you got checked out? That would be the person to ask, not on a forum. I’m not an OB or a pharmacist or your provider to know your personal history. If you didn’t mention it and it’s driving you this nuts, call and ask.
He said that it is not a problem, because it was just 1 pill and iron it is not bad if taken throughout the pregnancy, but I was just looking for a second opinion on this as I've heard multiple things about it suggesting that iron in first trimester is not good unless there is anemia present.
