I am currently at war with myself over what colours to paint all of the kids rooms. They are all currently grey, which I don’t mind cause it’s easy to pair with anything. However, each room has so many holes in the walls from the previous owner that I want to give them all some fresh paint to start off right. But now I figure, since I’m painting anyways I should do a fun colour!
It’s nice knowing genders (previously when we painted I’d keep it neutral since the gender was always unknown) but I don’t want to go too aggressively into pink or blue.
Any colour suggestions are welcome!! (I’ve got 2 girls rooms and one boy room to tackle).
I just saw a really cute nursery where they did accents in like a mustardy bright yellow.. which as I’m typing out sounds so weird but it was well done. And the decor was all pretty nature and flowers and stuff. Definitely sweet for a girl but not all pink at the same time.
@muggsd our 7yo daughters room is a SUPER light lilac color. In some lights it’s a grey-purple, in others it nearly looks white, but it’s true color is that light lilac. Feels neutral in the space and is definitely going to be easy to paint over when she I inevitably wants a change when she’s a teenager.
I’m a sucker for a dark paint- and even in shadowy or not-great-natural light rooms, using dark paint kinda conceals shadows so it ends up feeling bigger brighter!
We are doing a boho-mid century kind vibe for baby girl. The whole house has bold colors: dark teal or navy, marigold yellow and rust-orange accents, so I really wanted baby’s room to keep going on that pallet so it feels cohesive.
Hers are grey walls, white furniture to keep it light. And then coral, rust orange, marigold yellow, and light teal to soften the elements from the rest of the house for things like bedding, art, and decor.
I’m so excited to get things set up but gotta finish selling office/ guest room furniture from that space first 😅 With our first, I tried to play it cool like “it doesn’t need to be all cute and coordinated, it’s a baby, it’s not that deep.” This time? Nah, fuck it. I want cute shit and I care how it looks. No shame!
We were on the "it's a baby; it's not that deep" train for DD. Plus we were living in a rental so we focused mostly on the furniture and wall art. She had a blue dinosaur nursery (because blue is my favorite color, we both liked dinosaurs, and it's not like she cared).
For this one, the furniture will all be the same (a neutral grey) and the walls in this house are an awful yellow cream with light brown trim (I hate it so much but we're also going to move in 2 years so I'm not invested in fixing it). For DD's big girl room, I think I'll do grey furniture again with pink accents (though I expect some dinosaur stuff to migrate with her). For the nursery, I was originally going to keep the blue dinosaurs, but after reading this thread, now I'm not sure.
@muggsd - I just painted my girls' room a lovely sage. I don't have actual pictures, but here's the Lowes link. I feel like it's a nice calm neutral color that's not gray or beige. We paired it with a ton of unicorns and rainbows, but I think it would work with creams or other neutrals as well.
This was DD1's room:
DD2:
And apparently I don't have pictures of DS's room, but it was the same nursery/furniture but with navy blue accents.
If anyone is interested in doing wallpaper, we just used Love vs. Design for a peel + stick and it was so easy to use! You pick the pattern, and then the colors! This is for my closet-office but here’s the result of four panels:
And then I was able to touch up the wall in the former-office-now-baby’s room: That shelf is actually level, I just took a shit picture, and the wall is patchy bc after I sanded down the spackle, I didn’t use a damp towel so I gotta properly clean up my mess 🙃
BUT! So much progress today. The desk just needs some poly and and cable holes drilled tomorrow. But I also moved all my office stuff from the old space and moved it downstairs- I’m so ready to get this desk finished and start building baby furniture now that the physical space is there! 🎉
@heytallmama that looks awesome!! I’m looking into doing a wall paper. I found a pretty floral one that will match the existing navy blue accent wall that was my sons room. But I’m also afraid to do it. 😅 this is the first time we actually have the space for a nursery though so I kinda want to go for it.
@TortugaAzul go to Lovevsdesign.com — you can practically color match and they made installation a breeze. It’s more like a high quality contact paper. But they tell you which panel to install in what order, indicate top and bottom, tips for installing…
this was the first I’d ever done a wall paper, too, and we were done in 30 min! Having a laser level helped because of the pattern but definitely wasn’t necessary.
Regardless of where you get it, give wallpaper a try! It’s fun! And most kinds are pretty forgiving (according to tik tok lol)!
Husband built dresser for the baby’s room while I was out today! Shits getting real. He’s working on the crib now! Peep the adorable rocking chair made for me by my grandfather in the 80s. I love that both of my girls will have also gotten to use it!
The dresser is from them Hemnes line at IKEA. We use it as a changing table too- it’s the perfect height for us. We had a longer one with our first and it was fantastic.
The crib we got is also IKEA and the Myllra style. It converts to a toddler bed and also has storage drawers.
@heytallmama I love the little rocking chair, that's so sweet! We also used the dresser as a change table. We have a standard dresser with a mirror on it and it works so well. Also having a mirror for baby to look at themselves was so helpful during diaper changes
@heytallmama I took your advice and went with lovevsdesign for the wallpaper! I was able to match the existing blue wall and the dresser fronts almost perfectly! I picked this dresser up from the side of the road a long time ago and I think it will work nicely for a changing table top.
The walls in here were red and white stripe for an avengers room for my boy so I’m super impressed with the wall paper covering all that up! @heytallmama
Omg @TortugaAzul not only am I pumped at how well that worked for you but I’m SUPER jealous because that was the pattern I wanted but husband vetoed! It looks so good!! 😍 I love how the blues match damn near identically!
Obsessed with our new nursery recliner (however stressful the story of it arriving is - see weekly check in 😂)! DS is still in the crib and will share this room with baby come summertime. He will be out of the crib at that point I’m hoping because the room has minimal space 😬
I just spent all of yesterday afternoon/evening and this morning/afternoon painting my daughters' new room in the basement, so we can start the process of shuffling all of the kids rooms around. I am so so tired, and I still have 2 more rooms to paint
The silver lining (kinda?) is that I ended up with a full gallon extra of the pale pinky/sandy colour I used for half of the big girls' room, so I don't need to make a decision for the nursery colour since I'll just use that! I hate making decisions so I'm happy to just go with the flow on this one
@lightintothevoid Husband found the printed directions tucked away in one of the pieces! You know, after he was 90% done assembling 😂 I’m so glad we got this crib and it feels surreal to see built in the space. I’m so excited to clear boxes and stuff out of the room this weekend to really start setting up in earnest.
Bonus: we have 3 generic art prints on the wall but I’m going to go get nice paper and grab some fresh paint that ties into the room colors for our daughter to make artwork for baby to hang instead. I’m ridiculously excited about this 🙂
Progress! Next up is washing and organizing all the clothes filling that crib and dresser 😅
So the table on the right is a little side table I refinished- I’m trying to recall what I’ll want/need in quick access while I’m up with baby. Help! So far I’m thinking: - phone charger - head phones (so I can listen to things while she’s nursing or whatever) - chapstick - lanolin/ nipple cream - tissues - my eye drops - water bottle that will live in this room, lol …what else!?!
Finished the mural in the nursery/guest bedroom! Backstory: The walls when we moved in were the same color as the carpet-1980’s mauve. I wanted the room to be teal and chose the Benjamin Moore color of the year (2021) which was “Aegean Teal”. That’s the main color you’re looking at. It never looked teal to me, looks more like a solid blue. When we got pregnant I really wanted to repaint the room green. I got so many paint samples and didn’t like any of them 😂 so I decided to keep the room blue and use all the sample colors to paint a mural. The copper I had left over from another project so I added it in for an extra pop of color. And the dark green of the trees is the left over paint from the accent wall in our bedroom. But all the other colors are various shades of green - even the clouds although they look white in the picture and in real life. I’m pretty happy with how this turned out! Our theme ended up being broadly forest friends/woods/dinosaurs/green and the mural ties it all together.
@excitedforpiscesbaby that looks so fantastic! I love the pop of copper- it really adds a nice contrast to bring out the varying shades of green. So cool!
