Re: Baby Names

  • Oh, couple other suggestions that I like: Oscar, Arthur, Atlas, Adrian, Lucien, Theodor, Carlo, Sylvester, Matti, Elliott, Conrad, Marius.

(Bear in mind that I am not a native english speaker and a few of these would sound differently to the english pronunciation. However we both want our child to have a name that works reasonably well internationally.

  • This is so fun @tessiesmom26! Thanks for kicking this off! We are looking for an Italian name that works in English as baby is half-Italian, half-American and will grow up in England for at least the first ten years. I'm vetoing most male Italian names that end in "a" because my poor friend Andrea (Italian male) was constantly mistaken for a female when people would read his name. Luca is the only one I haven't vetoed because it seems reasonably common in English-speaking countries to recognize it as a male name. I also don't want a name which is too long, for example, I love Alessandro but it's a real mouthful. Any suggestions welcome! Last name is Italian, 3 syllables, ending in "o."

@justkp I really like Max. My son had a friend called Max that was short for Maxim if you were looking for options of longer versions though I fully support you picking straight Max if that's what you love! Have you told YH that you love Max?
  • @Paturkey I have a friend who’s Italian-American, in that her parents are from Italy and her grandparents only speak Italian. Her brother’s name is Massimo, Max for short, so it also could work for your situation.

@justkp my husband and I both like Max, but it becomes a bit of a problem with my husband’s last name, which can be slang for penis. The American versions of some of your other names are on our list, too, like Theodore, Elliott, and Arthur.

We’re trying to use either Ross or Reed as a middle name, and personally I love Elliott Reed but that’s also the name of a main character in Scrubs and I don’t know if other people would notice that or not. Any thoughts on whether a 20 year old show is old enough that it doesn’t matter anymore (especially since it’s not actually the inspiration for the name, it just happens to be one we like)?
  • @Paturkey I really like Italian names! Suggestions: Mattia (though ending in a, I don't think it has the same issue as Andrea), Matteo or Marco? Luca is nice as well. In my country it is one of few names that have huge popularity with boys and girls alike!

He knows I love Max, he also brought it up as an option when talking baby names with my sister, she told me. For him the baby still doesn't seem entirely real so he struggles with names and stuff. He can better work with getting the right car, the right house etc than shopping baby gear, picking names and the like 😂 I like Maxim. If I would go for a 'longer' version it would either be that or Maximilian (which is a bit to the long side!).

  • @fertile-turtle Oh yeah, suppose Max is off the table in that scenario! Our baby will have my middle name which would make Maxi a very likely nick name. But honestly I love that too 😂

I haven't watched Scrubs so I am unable to say if I'd think that, but I'd say the name works well? It wouldn't matter in school, kindergarden etc as the kids would not have watched the show, and I suppose if others think you've gotten the inspiration from the show it's not really a big deal? I imagine he'd just be called Elliott anyway?
  • @justkp I love the name Max! We had two Max's in my Nov18 group, one I think was just Max and one was a elongated version if memory serves.

@Paturkey I don't really have any suggestions, sorry! The only Italian boy name that comes to mind is Vincent/Vincenzo.

@fertile-turtle I love Elliot Reed! When I hear the name Reed and think TV I go straight to Spencer Reid lol.

We have a front runner, but DH isn't ready to commit to it, so we keep discussing names. I haven't found one I like better than our front runner, but I am trying to see if anything sticks out. I suddenly have the urge to finalize a name for this baby boy for some reason. With DS I was team green, but we had names for both picked out so early, that I somehow feel like I'm behind the eight ball.

We are going with my Grandfather's name as the middle name, which is Albert. We want to find something that flows well with that middle name. DH has a VERY non-traditional name, I have a fairly uncommon first name, and DS has a very common first name, so I feel like BB2 can't have a super common name, but I'm not sure that's entirely rational, lol.

Here is a list of ones I like, in no particular order:
    Jackson
Theodore - nn either Theo or Teddy
    Miles
    Mason
    Everett
    Henry
    Beau
    Benjamin/ Benson - nn Ben

  • @fertile-turtle I loved Elliot for a girl's name, so that’s what we named our now two year old! Super cute, and nobody ever thinks of Scrubs when we bring up Ellie’s full name.

Our naming has been a fun/funny story. My husband and I have C and D names, so we went with a B name that wasn’t super girly- Bailey, for our first daughter, after George Bailey from “It’s a Wonderful Life”. Then when we had our second daughter, we wanted either an A or an E name, hence Elliot (Ellie), also not super girly. For the little guy coming, we had to go with either an A or an F name to stick to the alphabetical rule, and so far we’re set with Finn (maybe short for Finneas, but not totally sure). Who knows, we might still break our “rule”!

I mainly wanted to have a name in place for our kids. My parents were really slackers naming us, and I was named after the nurse that helped deliver me 🙄 Didn’t want to do that to my kids!! Lol
  • It’s good to know the name combo actually sounds good and it’s not just the familiarity making me like it! Which I think is why the TV character connection has been bothering me - nobody his age will even know about the show, and most adults besides teachers won’t even know his whole name anyway.

@justkp my husband has the same issue as far as “he’s not here yet, so it’s not that real.” We have at least gotten as far a short list, which is apparently very short - just Elliott (my favorite), Theodore/Theo/Teddy, and Oliver/Ollie. I don’t know if we’ll 100% nail it down before he’s born, although I’d rather have it settled.

@Paturkey I think Luca is a great name, and I don’t think there’s any risk of getting mistaken for a feminine name. I’m sure there’s other good ones, but I can’t think of many right now. How do you feel about long names with short nicknames?

@tessiesmom26 the question of how common is too common is definitely hard! If you’re in the US, hat’s most common is very regional and you can look up what was most common in your state in 2021 within the Social Security lists if you want. Something that’s really common overall, like Theodore, may not be that common where you are.
  • @cpk3535 oh good! I also love Elliot for a girl - I feel like it’s genuinely pretty gender-neutral, as is Bailey. And if nobody thinks of Scrubs with Elliot as a girl’s name, we’re probably safe. It was definitely a big comfort show for me in grad school, so I know I’m more likely than most to notice 😂. Finn is also a great name! It stands alone well, but Finneas is definitely a nice longer version, too.
  • @fertile-turtle I definitely think you're safe with the unintentional Scrubs reference! I really like the name Elliot, too! On my naming, I do like long names with short nicknames in general and actually I'm not sure what nickname a Luca would have since it's so short already (Luke?). But Alessandro <surname> would be seven syllables long which just feels like a lot (though Sandro is a nice nn and Alex of course works in English). Having said that, many Italian names are three syllables so it's likely this baby will have a long name no matter what 😂

@tessiesmom26 I like lots of your names but I am personally very partial to Theodore (love Theo and Teddy), Henry and Ben. Any of them could work with Albert! The decision about common names is really tricky. I wanted less common names with my first two but with this baby I'm looking at name popularity in the USA, UK and Italy 🤣 It's a lot. I think in the end you need to go with the name you want to use regardless.

@justkp Matteo is definitely on the list (it's a family name on my side, too). I love the nickname "Teo" (tay-oh). My son suggested Valentino (nn Tino) which is cute especially as he's due 2/16 and could actually be born on St. Valentine's Day but that might be a bit.... cheesy.

@cpk3535 I love Finn! Your alphabetical names are super cute and since they're not in order it doesn't read as though you've planned it. I mean, the kids would be B, E, F which could just be random.
  • @karbaud I really like your names! Arlo is great and Felix is sort of on our list, too. I love Felix but the Italian version is "Felice" (fuh-lee-cheh) which I just don't like as much. All of your names flow well with Richard but I think I like Arlo Richard the best - no bad choices though!

@paigemm23 Charlotte Gloria is really nice and the story to go along with it is lovely <3 There are also lots of nicknames for Charlotte. Francesca could be another option if you were still considering a 'Frank' name and "Frankie" could be the nickname - just throwing it out there.

Thanks for the love on Luca, everyone! The problem is, when I've been reading you guys saying you like it, in my head I keep saying "But that's not his name yet!"  :D I feel like that's a sign to keep looking. Some other names we are considering:
    Matteo (Teo)
    Gianni
    Giacomo (Jack/ Mino)
Nico (this is usually a nickname but we don't like Nicolo or Nicola)
    Luigi (Gino)
We also like Francesco and Leonardo but those are super popular so I'm less keen. Still in the mix are Vito, Gianluca, Dante, Federico, Diego... naming humans *is* hard 🤣
Middle name will probably be Roberto after my partner's grandfather if that helps. I'm not too worried about flow however I do call my other kids by both their first and second names regularly, but my daughter has a long first name and I usually just use her middle name alone when I'm making a point 😂 So this one will probably get called Roberto when he's being... uncooperative.
  • @Paturkey, those are all great names. My favorites are Matteo, Gianni, Nico, and Diego. All good choices though. I agree that naming humans is hard. I knew what the name would be if it was a girl (Mari Jeanann). Once we found out it was a boy, I tried and then gave up for a long period of time (or decided to postpone finalizing the name at least). 😆

@seeds_of_joy, Willow Joy is lovely! I had Willow on my girls list, but my car is named Willow. Lol. My husband loves Lucy, but our cat is Luci. This is what happens I guess when (for most of my life) I was 75% sure I wouldn’t choose to have kids. We used up all of our good names. Luckily, we are having a boy.
  • @karbaud...I've made that mistake too because we thought we were done. We named our dog Hazel and that was always a favorite girl name and we had a rabbit named Pearl.
  • We are thinking about naming our baby boy Everett Thomas after my husband’s great grandfather and my dad. Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on it!
  • @Paturkey I also love Matteo/Teo (love that nickname!), Gianni, and Nico. And I knew a guy who was just named Nico, not one of the long forms, so I don’t think that would be a problem at all.

    @seeds_of_joy that’s such a beautiful name!

@ttc3y yeah, honoring multiple cultures with very different naming traditions and phonetics is challenging!

@knottie Everett Thomas flows so well, and is one of those combinations that sounds both strong and sweet, you know? It’s great that you’re able to incorporate family names from both sides so well!
  • @nwshay I love Oren! It's different yet classic. Magnus is cute too.

I love all of the names 💕

I am having my first girl, so I was very selective with her name 😊.
Her name will be Soleil Rose. It is pronounced So-lay, the L at the end is silent and it means “sun, radiating new light” in French ♥️
Rose is my hubbys mom and grandmothers name.
  • @iscarelys such a beautiful name and meaning!!

@justkp where are you from again?

@Fertile_turtle Oliver is super cute. My daughter's is Olive but would totally name a boy Oliver otherwise.
  • @seeds_of_joy I'm just a cycle-loving, blonde, blue eyed, liquorice eating Dane! My child will be 1/4 Finnish as FIL is from Finland. Oh, and in my heart I'm part Irish through naturalization after living there for a couple of years. o:)

    @nwshay

    Scandi names with Oren:

    Oren Mathias (or Matti)
    Oren Axel
    Oren Elias
    Oren Storm
    Oren Gustav

Magne is also used a fair bit, could be an alternative to Magnus. Same origin, but there was a couple of years where there would be a number of Magnuses in a every class, which made Magne a good alternative for a lot of people.

So many amazing name choices in here!

Weve been in the process of moving so honestly haven’t put a ton of thought into names yet but our number one contender so far is Lucy. Possibly Lucy Elizabeth, Elizabeth being my sisters middle name. May also go the route of using my maiden name as her middle name. I’m not 100% sold yet because I usually like a longer name with nickname option But it’s the name we keep going back to so we’ll see!

@cpk3535 My second son is a Finn, short for Finnegan, so I definitely think this is a great choice. Finns are feisty little things, in my experience 😬

@nwshay Oren is such a cool name. Pretty badass too!

  • Thank you so much @justkp
  • @amccurls such a pretty name!! I've never heard of Milagros.
  • @seeds_of_joy thank you! She’s from Spain so it’s a Spanish name meaning miracle
  • @seeds_of_joy thanks for sharing. That was fun to read but I'm a little upset I can't name my baby Mon1ca 😂.  Also, I'm curious what Tom, Sarah, Linda, Camilla, and Harriet did to get their names banned in different countries.

@kamays54 Lol I was geeking out at some of those with my oldest boy. I asked the same question about Linda, Harriet, etc!!! I'm wondering if a lot of these weird ones were from people trying to legally change their names as adults and "they" could only stop it by banning the name. I really hope people wouldn't name a baby most of these.
  • @seeds_of_joy why would New Zealand stop some from naming themselves Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii.  It's fabulous! 😆
