Alkyd Paint in Nursery

My sweet mother offered to paint the nursery for us this weekend. She used 0 VOC paint for the walls, but an Alkyd paint (definitely not low VOC) for the shelving and I’m trying to remain calm.

Does anyone have advice on how long to stay out of the house? Should I legitimately be worried, or am I overreacting?

This is the exact paint she used:

My doctor wasn’t exactly helpful with advice here, so please don’t tell me to call her.

  • What is wrong w/ the paint she used?  Its not lead.

  • It’s oil based, which is really not recommended to breathe in during pregnancy.

Lead would definitely be worse ha. I realize I probably grew up breathing in this paint, and I tuned out ok, I’m just cautious. And the house smelled so bad when I left. So bad.
  • I definitely would be worried too if I were you. Maybe you can keep the nursery door closed and the window open for a few days to air it out?
  • Yea, that is the plan, I went to stay with a friend for a few days too.

I’m worried about long term exposure for the baby also, since he will be sleeping in that room eventually. I am not sure how long those fumes stick around. I’ve read years.
  • Get some fans and let it air out. If you’re concerned about it, talk to your doctor. But generally if it were that dangerous they wouldn’t allow it to be sold.

I wish that were true!  Can we live in that world?   It kills me how many hormone disrupting and otherwise dangerous chemicals are in everyday items.  I wanted an inexpensive registry, but finding items without PVCs,
Brominated Flame Retardants or regular flame retardants, DWRs, PFAs, and Polyurethane Foam is apparently hard to do and sends the price of items up.
