26 weeks, possible placental separation

Sorry, long post. I will start with me and baby are doing great but we're in the hospital. I'm rather bored and thought I'd share what's happening in case anyone else experiences 2nd trimester bleeding.

My husband and I were intimate yesterday morning and when we separated there was quite a bit of blood. I have never spotted in this pregnancy and had a MC in Dec so obviously very alarming. I was not having cramps, contractions, or pain of any kind. I paged the midwife on call. While waiting I drank some juice and reclined to wait for baby to move and he was moving as usual.

Because I am 26 weeks and described more active bleeding than you'd expect from cervical irritation, she recommended I go to the hospital triage. In triage, 1st pelvic exam was inconclusive to origin of blood but I was still actively bleeding. They drew labs and I had an ultrasound. Everything looked good. 2nd vaginal exam showed blood was potentially coming through cervix meaning originating from uterus. An ultrasound cannot reveal the beginning of placental separation which can lead to abruption so they are treating it as such to be cautious.

I had my first shot of steroids yesterday afternoon in case of emergency delivery or preterm labor to support lung development. 2nd shot is this afternoon. Bleeding stopped by my evening exam so I am now just under observation. If bleeding remains gone, I should go home tomorrow. They want me to remain in case of full separation though many women go on to have normal pregnancies.

If all stays well, I would have extra growth ultrasounds to monitor baby and frequent non stress tests. I could live life normally though (not bed bound). They would most likely induce between 37 and 39 weeks. Fingers crossed I continue to be bored.
