Fit Friday (Aug 5th)

What have you been doing for exercise?

Has anyone started a prenatal specific routine?

Have you had to make modifications?

Or are you hibernating in the AC because it's too dang hot outside? (Totally counts as a healthy habit.)

Re: Fit Friday (Aug 5th)

  • Oh I missed this earlier!
It’s going to sound like nothing, but today I went to my gym for the first time in months. Just baby steps, light-ish cardio, mild weights, but it’s more than I’ve done in a long time. I’m holding myself to going in for yoga class on Tuesday morning and seeing how that goes. I’m nervous about doing things I’m not supposed to, but I think I over worry.

  • @cc_clark that's great!!  For the yoga class can you ask the instructor ahead of time if they are aware of any modifications to poses that you make being pregnant?  It has seemed like in most yoga classes I've taken that there already are usually a few pose options given with levels of difficulty.

Current exercise has still been running and free weights, my weekly mileage has slightly dropped and the bathroom stops have increased (at least there is a pro to treadmill running when it's sweltering).  I'm not loving the abdominal stretching and round ligament discomfort.
  • @cc_clark good on you for making it to the gym! As for yoga, Like @willrunforcookies said, I'd mention to your teacher beforehand that you're pregnant and they might be able to help with modifications. I think the main thing is to avoid deep twists and laying on your belly lol. And when in doubt, just do child's pose. 😆

@willrunforcookies I'm so amazed by women who keep up running while pregnant. I really miss running!

AFM - I've been doing better in the second tri about getting up early on weekdays and doing prenatal plates or free weight exercises. Early morning is the only time of day I can stand to work out when it's so hot. Hopefully I'll get out for more walks and such as it cools down too.
  • @willrunforcookies kudos to you! Running was always hard for my lungs no matter my fitness level, and I’m impressed by others who can just go for miles. Good for you to keep it up!

@jennifer_louise i also hope to get out for longer walks once it cools off in the next month or two. Pilates was on my list to try out this week or next, too. Do you find a big difference between a regular class and prenatal routine?

And thank you both! I’ll try to get there early and see if I can catch the instructor before she starts. The gym owner stopped to check on me yesterday (it’s a small womens only) and gave me some of the same advice to just not “go deeper” and focus on any stretch is more than not.

  • I’ve been using the move your bump app and really loving it! I have major SPD and did during my last pregnancy too so yoga and stretching and running all feel awful in my body right now but the workouts are ALL geared for pregnant women and to protect your core etc! Highly recommend!

I’ll also be buying the belle methods push prep course for sept-oct … it’s Pilates but preps you for birth! Highly recommend
  • My friend told me about this prenatal work-out plan/work-out videos and I have been really enjoying them.  Unlike most prenatal workouts I've encountered on youtube, these are meant for mamas-to-be who were active prior to pregnancy and want to continue to challenge themselves in their physical fitness regimens.  Thought I'd share in case anyone else is struggling to find something engaging like I was!
