2nd Trimester

Cholestasis of pregnancy ?

Hi everyone ! I was recently diagnosed with Cholestasis of pregnancy , I am currently 20 weeks and both my midwife and obgyn were in shock pretty much, both saying they personally have never seen cholestasis before the third trimester. Baby is developing normally and my bile acid levels  aren’t terribly high, just wondering if anyone else has been diagnosed with it, what week, other than medication what have you done to ease the itchiness, and how early were you induced?

Re: Cholestasis of pregnancy ?

  • I was induced at 37 weeks with my daughter. My itching wasn’t terrible until then. I had mild itching beginning at 32 weeks and  Honestly nothing made the itching better except ice packs. When the itching got really really intense I was induced within 15 mins of walking into the hospital.

Wish I had better advice but good news is within 30 mins of my daughter being born the itching was gone
  • Definitely crazy to me to think it will go away once I give birth which is what my doctor has told me. They also told me if I ever get pregnant again it’ll be the same thing pretty much, that once you have it with one you’ll have it with all of them

It’s pretty common to have it again with subsequent pregnancies, but it’s certainly not guaranteed. I know someone who went hard core liver support during her subsequent pregnancies - adding in foods and supplements that are supposed to help your liver function - starting very early on. Who knows if that’s what specifically did it, but she has successfully avoided it in all her subsequent pregnancies.
  • I have been having significant itching on arms and legs especially at nights. Could you tell me more about your symptoms?
