Sertraline in pregnancy

Hi
I am 9 weeks pregnant and I have just had a conversation with my doctor which has been quite unhelpful.
He rang me to discuss taking my sertraline while pregnant and was really unhelpful and really gave me no information just more questions.
I think continuing to take sertraline for me would be a good idea so I can stay well for the my son and family aswell as my self and still manage a job and life but at the same time I am concerned of the risks and would just like some real like feedback rather than a fact sheet to help me make my decision.
I obviously want my baby to be safe, always but I also need to be happy aswell as my family.
Any feedback from anyone who has taken this during pregnancy would be greatly appreciated x

Re: Sertraline in pregnancy

  • I am on 50 mg of sertraline. I had asked my doctor about taking it and she said it’s better for the baby if I am mentally okay - she said of the meds out there this one has been the safest and the side effect might be slight withdrawal symptoms for the baby if anything. If that is something we decide to avoid she said I can stop in 3rd trimester and then continue after birth. The lessening of anxiety is needed for me- so I am staying on it.

  • My psychiatrist said that the risk of me being unwell during the pregnancy are worse than the risks of the sertraline to the baby.
  • My doctor actually started me on sertraline during my last pregnancy (2019-2020) due to bad anxiety that was fine before I got pregnant but became debilitating due to pregnancy hormones, etc. I ended up on 100mg and have stayed on it ever since. Pregnant again now and definitely will be staying on it. Sertraline has been well studied in pregnancy and while there may be some very small risks, in my opinion (for me!) the benefits vastly outweigh the risks.
  • My psychiatrist says it’s one of the safest options actually as far as SSRI’s go. We decided I’ll continue to take it for the duration of the pregnancy and as long as he and my OB agree it’s still what’s best for me. As mentioned above the benefit of me being less anxious and able to function properly is super important.
