OB concerns

I am in a bit of a conundrum. I am having twins, which automatically means I have “risked out” of midwifery services and have to be followed instead by a GYN MD. I have been set up with a doctor that is newer to the area with 20 years experience, as the other OB’s are full and cannot take on another high risk patient. I have some concerns about this doctor based on what a friend has told me (she works labor and delivery at the hospital where I also work). It doesn’t sound like I have any other options except to see this doctor. Have any of you had this same type of situation? What did you do and how did it turn out? I don’t know that I can fully trust her, and her reviews aren’t great.

Re: OB concerns

  • Do you have the option of going to other offices that this doctor is t associated with? Or can you start with this doctor and already have an appointment with another to transfer care?

  • Maybe just take the initial appointment and make the judgement for yourself? Especially if you don’t fully trust your friends reviews. Otherwise, I’m sure there are other obgyns in your area.
  • Unfortunately, the two other doctors in this office are full and can’t accept any more patients (especially high risk), and the only other OB physician in my area is at a different clinic. I was told that there is some sort of contract thing between the two clinics that once you’re established with one clinic, you can’t switch to the other. I’m trying to see if they would make an exception since I haven’t actually established with an MD there, and my PCP is at this other clinic. But that doctor has to approve it and accept me and there’s a chance that won’t happen. So most likely I am stuck with this doctor that I don’t know I can trust. I do trust my friend’s reviews, it’s the doctor I don’t necessarily trust. I have decided that since I don’t really have a choice, I’m just going to educate myself as much as possible so I can advocate for what I really want, which is (ideally) a medication-free, intervention-free vaginal birth of my twins. I’m a nurse myself, and this doctor has a surgeons mentality and I feel like we will clash.
  • Are you in the US? No way they can make you stay at a doctor you’re not comfortable with. Contract or not you should be able to switch whenever you want. That’s sounds absolutely crazy. Ultimately, I hope you get the birth you want but I also hope that’s the safest option for you and your twins.
