Gestational Diabetes Thread!

Leave your questions, comments, recipes, and snack ideas here! I'm a vegetarian so anything I throw in will be meat free but not cheese free. Cheese is your very best friend with GD. Eggs are your second best friend.

Re: Gestational Diabetes Thread!

  • Thank you for this thread!!

I used to do fruit and kale smoothies a lot, but the fruit has too many carbs for me now. Are there any suggestions on a filling easy meal? Sometimes I just want to drink something instead of cook and eat, but I need the calories lol

  • Balancing carbs and protein is very important. For GD you want to eat between 15-30 carbs in the morning. Half of the amount of carbs you eat should equal the amount of protein you have to eat per meal. Sometimes they recommend 30-45 for breakfast but this all depends on how your body processes food first thing in the morning. Snacks should be between 15-30 carbs. Lunch and dinner should be between 30-45. Those meals should have at least 15 grams of protein... minimum. Milk is a great way to get extra carbs and protein.
Fasting blood sugar should be less than 95. After meal blood sugar should be less than 140. Sometimes the carbs are fine but you aren't getting enough protein.
Also water. You have to double the amount of water you were drinking. I drink 200 oz a day now.
  • Unfortunately smoothies are tricky. You *might* be able to make one with melon, Greek yogurt, milk, and maybe a minimal amount of protein powder. Depending on your body the low carb fake sugar stuff might make you feel like shit so be wary of those products.
Everyone processes this stuff differently. I like to make a hummus feta veggie sandwich on whole grain bread with milk
  • Doing my GCT tomorrow afternoon so we'll see how it goes. Going to stick to high protein, low carb foods in the morning (thanks for that tip @krysnicole1022 !) and since it'll be my birthday I'm going to save the birthday treats for after. Trying to come up with a yummy high protein low carb brunch plan for myself so it's still special.
  • Happy early birthday @krthouse!
  • @krysnicole1022 Thank you 🥰🥰🥰
  • Dang, y'all. Got a 9.5 on my screening (normal range is 4.0-7.7) so I'm likely going to need to do the 3 hour test. I hate fasting for things and I hate needles so I'm not happy. Really wasn't expecting this.
  • The three hour test is brutal AF. I like to do it first thing in the morning and plan for something greasy and delicious for immediately after to soak up what sugary hung over feeling. I got shake shack last time (portobello burger and onion rings). It's the light at the end of the tunnel.

I hate needles. I can't deal with shots or injections or any kind but after having to prick my finger four times a day I got used to it. I can do blood draws now because I have them so often. I used to have to be held down. My eight year old is better at it than me. 🤣
  • I took my test last Wednesday and strongly suspect I have it based on how nauseous and light headed I feel after eating carbs. The doc said I’d know by Friday but on Friday they released all the other blood work but the GD results and said I’d need to wait til Tuesday bc of the holiday! I know Tuesday is now tomorrow but like come on, we rely on this test info to make conscious choices!

I literally asked the nurse “so do I make brownies or not?” and she laughed. It was not a laughing matter. 😤
  • The lightheadedness is definitely a sign. I get excessively thirsty as well. Hopefully you don't have it and get good news tomorrow!
  • @krysnicole1022 definitely always thirsty, can’t go anywhere without my 32oz water bottle. Fingers crossed it’s residual morning sickness in the third trimester and not GD. ☹️
  • My mental health has really been struggling since seeing my test results. The prospect of potentially having to change my entire diet and monitor my food intake is extremely triggering as I have a history with an ED. Talking with my therapist about it tomorrow because I've already cried and panicked several times since last night.
  • I think my biggest fear is being unable to eat as much fruit as I want. That’s all my body has been craving, my fridge looks like a smoothie generator machine and I eat fruit of different variety 4-5x a day. My protein intake is laughable which is probably why I feel like garbage but I just want to keep my fruit!

Vent over, we’ll get through this ladies. It has an expiration date luckily whereas others aren’t as fortunate!
  • You can make smoothies with melon, Greek yogurt, select protein powder, spinach and whole milk! Add flax for fiber!
  • I'm a big fruit eater as well and it SUCKS.
  • My GD friendly breakfast this morning was an egg and cheese breakfast burrito on a tortilla with hot sauce. I do need to get protein tortillas for this meal but it's both filling and delicious. Typically I stay away from anything with white flour (not gd friendly) and stick with whole grains/whole wheat. I will post some GD friendly recipes as I remember them. Keep in mind I'm a vegetarian so I won't have any real meat in mine.
  • Just had my one hour test. That drink is nasty, but little man thought it was the best thing of the whole day

Hey Ladies! I had GD with my son, and haven't done the testing yet for this pregnancy, but just thought I'd share my two cents.

When I was diagnosed with my son I was completely overwhelmed at first, but after a week or two, it was completely manageable. And I just reminded myself of two things: 1) it is temporary... literally only 2-3 months!, and 2) As long as it's controlled it will NOT harm baby.

Like @krysnicole1022 said, managing GD has nothing to do with cutting back, and everything to do with managing carbs. Typically you have smaller, more frequent meals, and it seriously felt like I was eating ALL THE TIME!  No matter what your preferences, you can find something to fit in with GD... unless you crave ice cream cake and chips all the time! haha But even then, everything in moderation, and you can have a treat once every now and then.

At first I used MyFitnessPal to log all my meals and track carbs, but once I got the hang of it, it was pretty easy to figure out carbs for a meal. And I found snacks I enjoyed that worked (like popcorn and a peperoni stick, or half a banana and a handful of nuts, or a piece of toast with peanut butter, or triscuits and a baby bell cheese, or carrots and hummus, or cottage cheese with blueberries, etc).

One thing to note is that hormones increase over pregnancy, and so can insulin resistance. So even if you're doing everything right, you may need to increase meds. You NEED to eat carbs for baby to develop properly, so if your sugars are still going up and you're following your carb/protein guidelines there is literally NOTHING YOU CAN DO except take the meds!  GD is a lot like life... you can do everything right and it still doesn't work out how you want it to!

I'll post a couple pictures of the info I got at the GD clinic after this post.

  • It's entirely possible to manage without having to take any meds. I've never had to take meds but it does get a bit trickier towards the end but it goes by pretty quickly!
  • Managed to get an appointment in the morning fir the longer test. My midwife and my therapist both agreed that if I do have it and the dietitian I'm referred to is not versed in eating disorders then I should switch to someone who is so that I'm not damaging my mental health by trying to manage my physical health. All the info on how it's manageable is helpful, but the process of even having to think about my meals, let alone balance them, is a slippery slope for me.
  • Just twiddling my thumbs a week after my test impatiently waiting for the doctor to release my results which have been available to the doctor since last Friday….🙄

Also @krysnicole1022 that burrito breakfast sounds delicious. I’m not vegetarian but not into most meat either so pending test results I’ll gladly get some input from you!
  • @krthouse I'm glad they are taking you seriously!

@mcclanna that's absolutely ridiculous! Why is it taking so long??
  • I've been running around all day with my kids so now I have time to write this.
The main thing about GD is that it's different for everyone. Some women absolutely cannot manage without meds, especially those with HG or who vomit a lot. It's basically impossible. During my second round of GD the dietitian tried to bully me into taking insulin so I could "make it easier on myself". I declined and while it was difficult I was able to manage by adjusting my diet accordingly as I got further along.
Another important part is finding your sugar triggers. I can eat melon and apples but berries will cause a spike I can't recover from quickly. It super sucks for me because I love strawberries (although technically not a berry unlike bananas which are berries). It's an adjustment but it's only for a short time.
There is no shame in taking the meds but don't get bullied into it.
Staying hydrated is super important. You should be drinking 150 oz a day minimum. That's not an exaggeration. You can get real sick real fast with GD if you aren't hydrated.
Always keep two kinds of snacks on you: one for normal snacking (nuts) and one for if your blood sugar tanks. I basically carry around a pack-it bag with cheese at all times.
I second @Mia80 said about my fitness pal. That's definitely what I use when I have to track my foods.
  • Party’s over ladies. Doctor called, I have GD and the one hour test results were so high they don’t even recommend the 3 hour and just go straight for an US, get the prickly sticks and meet with a nutritionist.

My first reaction is to get a good cry in there and then get to work so I guess shoot your advice out on how to track properly (someone said MyFitnessPal?), website with recipes, and literally anything else cuz I am super green here.

    And sad. I’m super sad.
  • I think the only silver lining is that they aren't putting you through the three hour glucose test. It's completely unnecessary when your one hour is high. It can tell you how long it takes to process the sugar out but that's not worth the sickness that comes with it.

My fitness pal is fantastic for tracking carbs and protein. The nutritionist should give you a lot of good enough in food breakdowns. I can tell you my favorite bedtime snack is multi grain toast with dark chocolate peanut butter and a glass of milk. I don't like milk but I drink a lot of it with GD.
I didn't use a website for recipes because of the whole vegetarian thing. There are some out there but most are for meat eaters. I would make quinoa stuffed peppers. (Fake) chicken wraps on protein tortillas with peppers, spinach, and yogurt ranch.
Cottage cheese is an excellent snack with an apple.
  • Also cry and rage. Do it. It's okay. You can and frankly, you should. I absolutely did the first time. Plus rage crying is practically a workout.
  • I am also sad <3 I have cried SO many times since testing positive. It isn't our fault, it's hormones, but damn does that irrational guilt still hit hard anyway. Im glad we have this thread though, huge support help.

I've been tracking my food on my Fitbit tracker but I might switch to my fitness pal if it's easier to track carbs. Fitbit you can add the food, but it doesn't give you an easy way to view carb counts unless you're looking at the whole day so I gotta do mental math to count.

I have a blood sugar thingy where I prick my own finger 4x a day. I am awful with needles so husband had to do it for a while until I got more used to it. I met with a fetal medicine specialist today and I have to send her my logs so they can help me course correct if something goes badly. I have come to appreciate the pricks because it is an immediate feedback on when it is good or bad, I'm not just sitting around waiting to find out.

Tomorrow is the dietician, and i didn't even consider asking for one with eating disorder experience because I'm also in that boat (not really allowed to count calories because I tend to over restrict and then eventually cave hard into binge eating).

I've eaten so many babybel cheese rounds. So. Much. Cheese!

Egg muffins with friendly ingredients are great to pop in the microwave in the morning. I eat them with either a side of whole grain toast or a multi grain English muffin with butter. Yummy, filling, AND won't spike your sugars.
  • Thanks ladies. I’ll get to researching tomorrow. Still in a sulky sad phase today.
  • @krthouse You should see if you can find an Intuitive eating certified dietitian/counselor. That would be a good indication that they will respect your ED and help you manage without pushing you back into those behaviors.
  • Did my test today and it wasn't as bad as I'd thought it would be. It was a 2 hour test with a 75mg solution. The first blood draw involved some kind of sorcery because it didn't hurt at all. I have small rebellious veins but they were able to just poke me once each time. I did feel a bit nauseous a little while after the glucose drink but brought water which helped a lot and the time passed faster than expected. Fingers crossed.
  • Wait- they let you drink water? Don't get me wrong I always do I just go hide in my car and do it. 🤣 Hoping for good results for you!
  • What? I was banned from drinking water and because I had brought it with me because dr said I could, they made me sit in the hot waiting room.
  • Went to Trader Joe’s and spent $130 on lower carb items, veggies, berries, snacks. Started tracking on LoseIt! which is my favorite tracker app cuz it has every food brand known to man. Now I just need to go to my US tomorrow and get the prickly sticks to get this party really started.

Looked it up online ahead of time on my hospital's site and plain water was fine. No one said anything about not having any and I was very visibly drinking it in front of the desk so assuming it was okay.
  • I had gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy 2 years ago, so just my experience:

No shame in crying. I cried for a full day. Once you get into a routine, it's not so bad. I had a meat/cheese omelette with wheat toast every morning. Snacks are your friend and where you can indulge in your fruit craving. It's all in moderation.

I always made sure I had almonds in my purse for a good protein in case I encountered some rouge carbs. Costco has some peanut butter dark chocolate protein bars that are only 15g carbs that were a lifesaver. Yasso bars for when you want something sweet. They are AMAZING!

DO NOT feel bad if you have to go on meds. My fasting numbers wouldn't go down, after trying metformin, I had to go on insulin. There is no shame in it and it's for the best for baby.

Lastly, I just got my 1-hour test results yesterday and apparently I am negative for gestational diabetes this go around! I'm a little hesitant to celebrate and am going to occasionally test my numbers. But exciting!
  • I just got my device today and it took me 5
pricks to figure out how to use it. I want to cry so hard, it feels like my life is going to revolve around food/snacks and pricking for the next 3 months. I know I should be happy it’s only temporary but I still feel so down.
  • I haven't taken my test yet, but I wanted to send all my love to you GD diagnosed mamas.  My husband is a Type 1 diabetic so I really know the stress and struggle and guilt of it all.  I'm here to offer some snack/food tips from our kitchen as well (although we're vegetarian and half celiac too).  Sending love <3
