blankets and pillows

I've been starting to think about crib bedding, and I think I want to go as minimal as possible. I'm not into bumpers, skirts, quilts, etc.

So I figured all I need is fitted sheets? Using blankets and topsheets and pillows are not recommended, right? Or at what age do babies/kids start using them? Wait for pillows until they move to a toddler bed?

Oh, and I have to share my brainstorm - I'm not crazy about most baby bedding but am a fanatic for pretty patterned grown-up sheets. I think it will be a pretty easy sewing project to turn one fitted double size sheet into two fitted crib sheets! So that's my current plan.?

Thanks for the advice!?

Re: blankets and pillows

  • Yes, technically all you need are sheets for the crib!  Maybe a blanket once they get old enough to get themselves out of it (typically 6-9mo+).  Pillows come much later... I probably won't give Payton one until she's in a toddler bed.

Making your own sheets from adult bedding should be pretty easy!  Have fun!  :)

  • As long as you have a few large good swaddling blankets (hopefully someone will buy you a few) you really don't need anything. I just liked a crib skirt so I could hide more things under the crib. :)

  • All we have are sheets, with a couple waterproof sheets underneath.  We do have a bumper that's very thin, at first it was for looks but now I'm glad it's there, DD stretches out her arms a lot and she'd probably whack 'em against the crib if the bumper wasn't there.  We used Koala receiving blankets to swaddler her in the beginning and now we use Swaddle Designs swaddle blankets because they're roomier, but that's it!  Most crib bedding is totally for decoration IMO.  :)

  • You definetely don't need all the bumpers, quilts and such.  I did bumper, skirt and sheets.  Mason would curl up right against the bumper, so we kept them in for quite a while, as it was the only way he would sleep in his crib.  I liked how the skirt hid all the hardware on his crib, otherwise you look right at the metal mattress holder and arm things to adjust it.

Sounds like a fun sewing project.  I have lucked out finding great sheets on clearance at pbk, but only had one pair before he came.

  • We have a bedding set but you really don't need one. We do use the bumper, but the quilt just sits on her rocker. I'm sure we will use it once she's older. We also have a crib skirt so I can store stuff under the crib. We need all the extra space we can get! I would recommend some really good swaddle blankets and some water proof crib sheets. My favorite swaddle blankets are by Swaddle Designs but they are pretty pricey. I got some other ones I also like a lot from MamaV2.0. She has an Esty site called Zblankets. They are really big and I use them just about every night. GL!

  • Thanks everyone! When you say sheets, do you mean bottom or bottom and top?

    :)?

  • Just a bottom - no top :)

  • I don't think they even make top sheets for cribs.  We have 3 bottom sheets and that is plenty, when they are tiny we had these sheet savers that were awesome and saved us from having to change ALOT of sheets if he spit up!  I would think about a bumper though, Cruz still snuggles up to his bumper in the corner of his crib and I think his crib would be draftier without it.  We don't have any pillows and once he could sit up we started adding in a blanket but the ones we use are baby blankets that you carry around with them not matching his crib or anything

  • We just have the fitted sheets for the crib. My dad purchased a set for us, but we never used it, except for the bumper and that was because DD would move to the corner and I didn't like seeing rail marks on her head when she woke up.

DD started using a pillow and blanket about 6 months ago. If you are planning on using a toddler bed (uses your crib matress) then you may want to make a flat sheet for the future, to match. Toddler bed sheet sets are expensive and not worth it IMO.

  • Yeah, no pillows or blankets (other than swaddling ones in the beginning) til later.  I think we gave Ben a pillow before he turned one.  I was trying anything and everythign to get him to sleep.   Now his bed is full of crap.  Two pillows, a blanket, about 5 animals.

But yeah, you don't need a crazy matched set of things... some sheets are plenty.

  • Three years of  working for the SIDS Foundation of Washington has made me a bit of a fanatic about sleep safety, I'm sure members of this board think I sound like a broken record, but I just can't help myself. :) I would always tell parents "A safe crib is a boring crib." You really just need the mattress and a fitted sheet. If you swaddle, just make sure the blanket is big enough and baby is swaddled tightly enough that he/she can't wiggle loose and have a loose blanket in the crib. Also, we'd recommend no hat if swaddled so baby can still regulate his/her body temperature through the uncovered head (overheating is a SIDS risk factor). If you find that your baby is getting limbs stuck in the crib slats, the ideal is a mesh bumper so you don't have to worry if they roll and their face ends up smushed against it. I'd wait until age 1 for blankets and pillows. If you need more warmth before that, you can do a blanket sleeper and then a sleep sack over that. Your plan to make sheets sounds great, I wish I was so crafty!

  • All we ever had was a fitted sheet. For a couple months we had a breathable bumper up because DD was a very mobile sleeper and would get her arms and legs caught in the side of the crib.

I think making sheets from adult bedding sounds like a great idea. I'm not a big fan of a lot of the baby bedding out there myself so we just ended up with green on white and white on green polka dots that we switch out about once a week.
