Baby Names!

Based on discussion today in the weekly check-in, I figured I’d start this thread to carry us through all things name-related! Anyone have names picked out yet? Ideas you want to toss around? Input you’d like to have? Tell/ask away!

  • If this baby turns out to be a girl it’ll be
    Sophia Dawn
    Emilia Dawn
(Dawn is a family middle name my mom and I both share :)

If this is in fact a boy I am liking
    John Mark
    James Mark
    Hunter Mark
    Walter Mark
    Charles Mark
(mark is my fathers name and our son how my father in laws name for a middle name)

  • @tryingktogku my husband LOVED Hunter but our last name is Green and Hunter Green is a color and I couldn’t do it 😅
  • We love the name Meadow Ann or Rebel (no middle name yet) for a girl. We have a 2 year old named Willow Darlene. And for a boy the first name will be Everek but are deciding between Atto or Jase for the middle name. We find out the gender in 3 weeks and are super excited!

For a boy I really like Gavin Daniel. I dont think my husband is in board with Gavin. Daniel is his dad's name. We haven't come up with any girl names yet. Our 2 year old daughters name is Amelia Jolynn. Jo is my mom's middle name and Lynn is my husband's mom's middle name.
  • @footdrbritt okay yeah Hunter green I could see why that wouldn’t work hahahaah I don’t mind Hunter BUT our neighbours dog is named Hunter so I’m kind of like ehhhh kind of a dog name ahhh
  • @cbhclark don't worry, this is a safe space! (Or at least I don't feel like I know you all well enough to flame you yet haha). DS has a daycare classmate named Fitz (short for Fitzgerald) and I LOVE it. I think that's a winner, personally, but I also have a soft spot for literary names.

I think this baby needs to start with an L just to balance out our family's initials a bit. For boys, this leaves us some great options: Luke, Lucas, Lee, Leon, Lane, and Leo (my favorite of which is the last one, fitting right into my literary soft spot 💜). Not quite so sure on girls yet so I'll be peeping this thread looking for L ideas. I like Leah but we have a semi close friend with that name.
  • @jennifer_loise I love Leon as well as Lionel which has the potential for Leo as a nn. For girls I once knew a Liette and always thought it was pretty and different. Also love Layla or Lyla.
  • I love hearing everyone’s name ideas!

I’m kind of stumped at the moment myself. I have a list but nothing’s standing out. Also DS’ middle name is Tiger and we like an animal middle name but have used Tiger, Fox and Bear and I’m having trouble coming up with another good middle animal name. I was thinking maybe Phoebe for a first or middle name, but I’m not sure (Phoebe is also a bird).

  • Apologies in advance for a long thread full of tags...

    @tmoreno93 I love Scout for a girl!

@beccahoehn One of my college friends has a daughter named Blake, and I think it's lovely.

@footdrbritt Ooooh I love Savannah! It would probably be a top contender (with nn Savvy) if a close family friend hadn't recently taken it...dang!

@tryingktogku Am I remembering from another thread that your son's name is Jack? (If so, I swear I'm not a creeper, I just have a really good memory :D) If so, I really love how John and James ring with Jack!

@jessicadmillard Willow and Meadow are a lovely combination <3

@cbhclark Fitz and Winry are such fun, unique names! I also worried about putting my names on here. And I also for some reason panicked about putting my daughter's name out there, even though (a) I probably have no reason to worry (not unique enough for anyone to track us down  :D) and (b) it could help with naming advice.

@jennifer_louise lololol at your flaming comment :D I love Leo! That might actually be a boy contender for us--it consistently comes up as a "match" with our daughter's name (Naomi), though I'm not 100% convinced of that. For a girl, maybe Leona? My BFF was going to name a daughter that after her grandma (but then she only had boys) and I've always thought it was a pretty name.

@zamoraspin Not sure on animal names for boys, but for a girl, Wren could be another pretty option!
  • @zamoraspin oh I agree with @L1C4gal Wren is a great animal name contender for a girl. So many good bird names, Robin too.
  • We are still working on names but so far I’m partial to Emily or Eloise for a girl and my husband likes Mary or Josephine, which are family names.  For boys we are having a harder time.  So far we have Steven, David and Luke as possibilities.

John Wayne for boy - it's a combo of my SOs dad and my dad
Girl were stuck on... Delores wil be her middle name (my SOs moms middle name and my grandmother's 1st name) but we disagree on every first name so far.
I LOVE Tessa! Also Vanessa, Sabrina,  Clara, and Jolene. Tessa is my aunts name but he doesn't want any -Esa. I don't want anything ending in -ly. I have 4 kids and he has 2 and this is our first (and only) child together. Im 40 and hes 44. We find out sex in 4 wks.
  • Like @cbhclark , I'm nervous about posting on here. We've finally decided names this weekend. 😊 We're sticking with L names as we both have L names (oddly similar to each other too). A boy will have his middle name and a girl will have mine. Additionally, I have an unique, non-gender specific name and we've decided to continue that with any girl(s) we may have.
  • I love the name Blossom Marie ❤️
  • @jesofthenorth we love ruby too! If we had a little girl with red hair my husband reallllly wanted to name her ruby lol (his mom has beautiful red hair)
  • I think we have settled on John Mark for a boy and Sophia Dawn for a girl (my son is Jack Thomas) and I know Jack and John are like the same name hahaha but we just can’t agree on anything else and I love how  John Mark flows (mark is a hard middle name to be paired with)

I don't know the gender yet. I really like Hailey Elizabeth for a girl & Tyler James for a boy my boyfriend's name is James and he really likes Elizabeth so I chose it for a middle name. What do you think?
  • @tryingktogku I love Sophia Dawn it's very pretty and I agree John Mark has a very nice flow to it

We have a few female names (Amelia, Elizabeth, Stevie), but are having a hard time with male names.

We like Oliver and Archer so far. Maybe James to call him Jamie. Our last name is a long, complicated Polish name, and we have a 2 year old daughter named Frannie.

We will find out the gender in about 2 weeks (did the genetic blood test on Thursday!)

The hardest thing is that my husband and I are both teachers, so we have lots of names that we associate with students, and that tends to eliminate them.
  • Our baby boy will be Zev!
  • We're having a girl. 🎀 My husband's top pick is Lyra, mine is Liliana. But Lyra is growing on me too. My name rhymes with it (Tara), so I'm unsure on how I feel about that. Also, I grew up with a short name that didn't have a good nickname & I feel like Lyra would have that problem as well. For middle names, we're thinking Grace or Ann. Ann was my mother's middle name, so it would be nice to honor her but Grace also has the same meaning as Ann so both might do the trick.
  • @cc_clark Holden is such a wonderful name! It always reminds me of The Catcher In The Rye. Our former neighbors had a son named Holden and he was the most outgoing little bookworm I’ve ever met. Amazing kid. No doubt your Holden will be amazing, as well! ❤️
  • We found out we are having a girl and are trying some names on. Our 2 year old's name is Frannie. We are thinking Abigail June for our new girl. We have a long Polish last name, so short and sweet is important.

    Thoughts on Frannie and Abby?
  • @hewg1287 my maiden name was Polish, and they’re hard to pair with for sure! Abigail is a sweet name, so is Abby as a nickname.

I have to say though, “Franny and Zooey” was the first thing I thought of (another J. D. Salinger classic).

As for our girl, we need a new middle name to go with Evangeline, because our cousins just named their daughter Ruby and we really don’t want to mimic them in any way! 😂 DH is a fan of Jett (as in Joan) and I’m partial to Rose, after my aunt, but we’re on the hunt for monosyllabic middle names!

Our last name is a struggle - Dix - so we’re really making sure whatever we pick has the least amount of variations to make fun of her. It will be relentless at some point in her life. Please feel free to offer suggestions!!!

Autumn is a top contender but we’re really struggling. Is it weird to name a baby Autumn when she’s born in the middle of winter?

Someone said Hailey - I like Hailey a lot and that name isn’t in my giant family yet.

I like Jane for a middle name but that would likely cause some family drama. One of my nieces is named Jane and she’s amazing, but I think others would be jealous / uncomfortable about us using that name.
  • @mommadix Autumn is a beautiful name no matter when she’s born. ❤️
  • @mommadix Autumn is a beautiful name! I don’t think I’ve ever known one actually born in fall, or like an April born in April, etc.
Could you do a variation or similar to Jane? Maybe something like Jean?
  • @mommadix I like Autumn!
Do you have other meaningful reasons for using Jane as a middle name? It's not like it's going as the first name.
  • Whenever I think about the name Jane - I envision an awesome woman throughout all stages of her life. Like every older woman named Jane I’ve looked up to, peer woman named Jane are go getters and amazing at whatever they’re doing and lil Jane’s are firecrackers!
  • @tmoreno93 - Scout is lovely. A wonderful nod to Scout Finch in 'To Kill A Mockingbird.'

  • I'm having a boy I'm 17 weeks and it's been so hard settling on a name so far we like Cameron James or Tyler James. We like James as a middle name since it's my SO and his dad's first name. Which one would you pick? Thanks so much and congratulations to all of you mommy's to be!! 💙💜💛💚
  • @maplemom12 both are great choices! If you’re polling for opinions though I think Cameron is less common than Tyler. I don’t know if that matters to everyone, I like the idea of having more unique names
