3rd Trimester

Should I ask for a new dr?

This is my second pregnancy, and Im worried because I have not gained any weight in the last 6 weeks. I am currently 129.8 lbs and 31 weeks in. I started at 121 lbs. I had to go to the hospital about a month ago and was found to be severely anemic despite taking the daily vitamins, so the on call dr prescribed additional pills. My OB asked if I was taking them at the follow up, I answered yes but she never checked my blood again to see if they were working. She also said not gaining weight is normal. Im in so much pain with my lower back and stomach that anytime the baby moves it brings me to tears, I cant even sit up for more than 20 mins at a time. I dont know if im being paranoid or dramatic with all these hormones or if my gut is right and my dr isnt doing enough to help me. Has this happened to anyone else? What would you do in my shoes?

  • It sounds like the pain you feel when the baby moves and when sitting could be a separate issue then the weight gain and anemia. Have you directly told your doctor the extent of your pain and your concerns about it? They aren't mind readers so you have to be direct about your problems and concerns about them. I have anemia and they didn't do a blood test for a long time but I could tell it was working. I went from sleeping and naping all the time and having terrible restless legs to a manageable amount of tired and no RLS. I haven't gained a lot of weight either and my doctor had me start drinking ensure or I also do carnation instant breakfast. She also told me to switch from skim milk to whole milk but I mostly drink almond milk.
  • Agree with pp that I think the weight gain and blood are separate issues from the pain.

Not gaining weight can be normal, yes. I have had blood issues, and they did not do any additional blood checks beyond the normal ones. I discovered it at a halfwayish blood check, I took some supplements, and then it was checked again at the next standard draw.

Have you talked to your doctor about the pain? Unfortunately, pain can be pretty normal in pregnancy.

  • You are nearing the end of pregnancy, it is uncomfortable! If it is super painful, then you need to speak up! The anemia and weight gain are two separate things.  If she is ok w/ your weight gain, then its ok.  Not everyone gains a ton of weight during pregnancy.
