I just went for a u/s at 18w 4d the ultrasound tech is usually really quick this time she took her time and looked at every little part of my son. Later I received a email that my baby has a 5 mm size intracranial bilateral
choroid plexus cyst in the fetal lateral ventricle, and I am in all out panic. I can't stop crying. 😩 Nobody even explained what is it that they found, after some googling (which did not make me feel better) I sort of understand what I am dealing with. I guess what I'm asking for is some reassurance from some other mothers that have went through this. I am a mom of two and pregnant with my third. Is this common? Please ease my mind.

  • Not the same thing- but we had abnormalities for our first. Chat with your doctor. Everything that I read about my daughter’s diagnosis led to early death… she is a healthy 4year old.

  • My first daughter (born in 2019) had this along with another soft marker and a VSD (hole in her heart). Like you, I was completely freaked out and worried there would be a major problem. I got an amniocentesis, and three weeks later I learned that her chromosomes looked completely fine.  From what I understand, choroid plexus cyst is not a problem in itself, but can sometimes be associated with different chromosomal abnormalities.  I have a totally healthy 3-year old and am pregnant with my 2nd.

Now I've heard that a lot of doctors don't even recommend amniocentesis when they find soft markers anymore because they are so common. I hope that gives you some reassurance. I remember looking for some comforting information online and finding nothing. If you can do the NIPT or amnio, that might give you some proof that things are okay. Meeting with a genetic counselor was also informative.
  • Hi! They found the same thing on my first born. We were freaking out at what it meant.. ended up doing a NIPT blood test around 20 weeks to make sure chromosomally everything was OK and so we could be prepared for the birth if it wasn’t OK. But everything came back normal and we know have a handsome and intelligent little wild man on our hands!!! I’m thinking of you and pray that you get some peace. The more I read, the more it seems like ultrasound tech is so advanced that we’re seeing things we didn’t used to see. Most of it is normal development.
