1st Trimester

Food Aversion

I am having an extremely hard time eating food thanks to nausea and food aversion. It started pretty normal with not wanting to consume coffee and meat, but now I find myself only being able to stomach toast, crackers, chips and potatoes. Has anyone else experienced sever food aversion in their first trimester? I’m 8w2d and having a hard time finding anything that I want to eat and I’m starting to get a little worried.

Re: Food Aversion

  • I am sorry to hear that.  I was in the same boat for the first and most of the second trimester.  I basically lived off crackers for many weeks.  Fruit smoothies and Pediasure (the one with the extra protein) drinks made me feel like I was eating something with more substance.  I also would try eating just a handful of crackers and then see if my nausea subsided enough to eat whatever my husband was having for dinner.  Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.  If you are really worried, you can call your doctor.  I ended up on a prescription for nausea and still was pretty sick most of the time.

Later on in my pregnancy, I still had the meat aversion.  We ate a lot of tacos and hamburgers, since the meat was hidden under other flavors and textures.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • I'm right there with you! This is my second pregnancy and I'm 7w2d, but I'm still experiencing terrible aversion. I'm not even hungry, and forcing food is terribly hard. My first appointment is Thursday, and my doc may prescribe an antinausea medication like last time, which helped (but didn't make it go completely away). I'm trying to eat small bits more often, and compensate with Premiere Protein shakes to make me feel like some nutrients are getting in there. I think it called down after week 9 last time. Here's hoping to get through it again!
  • Me ! Ive lost 12.6 lbs in the last 7 week.  I almost 🤮 todays nothing help not ginger not bubble water not small snacks nothing.

Im 36.5, around 7 weeks and there is 17 years between pregnancy opps.

Last time I only lost 7 lbs in the first 17 weeks.

the only thing that seems to help my nausea is extreme exercise. Hiking road riding  mtn biking lifting weights. Im a very athlete person

Yep- had it with all my kiddos but most of it eased off by week 13 for me. Still can’t eat meat or smell it cooking- was the same for all pregnancies.

Oh my goodness those are all mine too. Potatoes are my all time favorite food so I completely understand. I actually found that it’s the butter I ate that I didn’t like and also that I prefer meats mixed with things right now.  Anything meat plain is gross to me. Toast is a huge turn off too. You are not alone.

I know exactly what you’re talking about - try adding having a salt taste in your mouth 24/7 and heartburn.

I’d recommend eating whatever comes to mind that sounds appealing. I randomly wanted subway yesterday and demolished it. Peppermints have been helping with my nausea. I know it’s not the safest, but I actually just let one sit in my mouth when I go to sleep - so I can wake up with a taste other than salt in my mouth.

If you’re having a problem drinking liquids, I’d recommend Essential waters. I’ve been able to keep that down (and if I do throw up it’s that instead of stomach bile).

Graham crackers have helped me - and white cheddar popcorn lol. Good luck!
  • I am right there with you! My husband just learned how to hunt turkey. What do ya bet he brought in a huge wild turkey! I got to help pluck feathers, cut off the head and prep it. The smell of the turkey was so off-putting. We made a stock too! I couldn't go in the kitchen or even near the feathers. I told my husband he had to deal with it all. It's funny because turkey is my favorite, even for my food aversions when I have a debilitating migraine. Hands down, I can't stand the smell of beef. I crave chinese food, fruit and breads. I already had a strong sense of smell before getting pregnant, now it's more intense! The other day, my husband and I were out to brunch and I kept eating his potatoes. I told him our kid is eating all of his potatoes. Lol!
