2nd Trimester

Subchorionic hematoma with NO bleeding, NO symptoms?

FTM, 30 years old. I went for a routine ultrasound 2 days ago at 11w4d (not quite 2nd tri but close enough!). My doctor called yesterday to say that they identified a subchorionic hematoma (~3 cm), but that baby was measuring 11w5d and hb was 160. It was not identified on my previous ultrasound (9w4d). NIPT came back normal. She seemed very casual about it and gave me no restrictions. She essentially said that nothing can be done, and most cases resolve on their own. She did not mention the location or its size in relation to the GS.

I have had no bleeding, no out-of-the-ordinary cramping, or any other indication that this even existed. I went down the dangerous Google road and now I am a big ball of worry and fear. I see that some were ordered on bed rest, prescribed progesterone, specific diets, etc. I am completely freaked out. I have read about a lot of SCH being diagnosed earlier in the first trimester, but not so much at the end of the first/beginning of the second or asymptomatic cases. The majority that I see are identified after a bleed.

Feeling super bummed because we were planning on sharing our pregnancy with friends and family tomorrow, on Mother's Day. Thinking we should maybe stay quiet for a little while longer. Any words of encouragement, or previous experiences, are so greatly appreciated!!

  • She was probably casual about it, because it is a fairly small one.  Ther large ones are the ones to worry about, the most.

If you don't trust her, find one you /.  Don't look at Dr. Google

  • I also had an SCH this pregnancy that I believe was about that size as well. They do often resolve on their own and I also had absolutely no bleeding from it.

Don't be afraid to share your news! SCHs are fairly common in pregnancy and if you're not bleeding from it your risk is very low. I had a friend who was hemorrhaging from an SCH (she said it was like a murder scene!) and she now has 2 adorable twin girls.

  • They saw one on my ultrasound at 6 weeks and it was there until 19 weeks, I never had bleeding or any symptoms either. I was quite nervous too because I had a miscarriage last November. If your doctor isn't making a huge deal out of it, don't give it too much thought. Mine slowly disappeared (they often resolve on their own), they finally told me at my last appointment at 19 weeks that it was gone. If you haven't seen any bleeding or experienced symptoms, rejoice! That's good news.
  • I had 2 small SCH, and had a similar experience. Right before we were going to tell our families, I went to the doc for a tiny bit of spotting, and got a call letting me know (very casually). I wasn’t even sure what that was and they didn’t tell me, and after some Googling I freaked out and called them back to question them about it. Mine quickly resolved on their own. I wouldn’t be scared to tell your family, I think they are pretty normal and go away on their own most of the time. Also, you’re still pretty early, and from what I understand they are far less scary the earlier they’re found!
