Progesterone?

Hi moms!

Im just 6 weeks now and got a call to start progesterone 100mg twice a day. Had initial labs checked and was told my Hcg was normal but progesterone slightly low. They didn’t seemed concerned but I don’t think I even had my progesterone checked with my first pregnancy? Any experience out there? They are having my repeat the labs tomorrow to make sure hcg is doubling.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Progesterone?

  • Hi!
Wow, I was just about to start a new topic with this exact question. I’m having the same experience — I am about 5 weeks along and just had my HCGs done and they are doubling just fine but I was told my progesterone is low. They had me do it again a few days later and it was even lower :(
They put me on 200mg of progesterone 2x/day but they did seem concerned that this could be an indicator of more limited viability, which is obviously a hugely distressing thing to hear just after finding out I’m pregnant with my first. You said this was not your first pregnancy but the low progesterone never came up during your previous pregnancies?

Really looking for someone who has experienced this before and still had a successful pregnancy with a healthy baby. Anyone?

Abbrooks11: I just took my first dose today but I’d love to hear more about your experience taking it and if you have any side effects. I’m relieved to hear I’m not alone!

Zzzoe05- waiting for the call about my repeat labs but saw the results in the portal and can see my hcg and progesterone were up so waiting to hear next steps. My doc told me I could either take 100mg twice a day or 200mg nightly so I’ve been doing the nightly routine. I think I feel a bit more tired but that’s about it.

Can I ask if you are high risk? I am due to age and weight. For my first pregnancy, I didn’t see the doc until I was 8 weeks and if they did check it, it wasn’t anything I remember. I am 6 weeks 4 days now but going to a high risk practice and just had the labs done on Monday (6 weeks, 1 day) and it seems like this is their normal routine, but from what I’ve read unless you have a history of miscarriages or other cause for concern that routinely checking progesterone isn’t necessarily recommended.

Do you know when they plan on doing first ultrasound? I feel like that will bring piece of mind, but until then I guess we’re popping progesterone!

    Talk soon!
  • This is my first pregnancy and I’m only 5-6 weeks along so I haven’t heard anything about being high risk… however it’s looking like that may well be the case. I went back for more HCGs (they did not want to retest my progesterone as they said it wouldn’t likely have gone up much by now) and my HCGs were not doubling as fast as they’d like. The nurse I spoke to on the phone did not sound very optimistic. My first ultrasound was scheduled for 12 weeks but because of this situation they moved it to 8 weeks (if I make it that long  ).

I sincerely wish you much better luck than I am having and am so happy to hear your numbers are going up normally! I get more HCGs tomorrow and can only wait and hope the numbers are doubling faster. I think if I brace myself for bad news it will be a little easier to accept, and that way if it’s good news I can be pleasantly surprised. Will keep you posted and hope you do the same!

It sounds like we’re in a very similar situation. Stay optimistic! What I’ve been telling myself is that there’s really only two ways this can go and there is literally nothing you can do about it so might as well be optimistic. Just keep taking care of yourself and baby the same way you would have if they never said anything!

  • Hi, this is my second pregnancy and the second time I've had to be on progesterone through the first trimester. My first was most likely due to the fact I have PCOS and my body just can't behave. However, the good news is that I was able to come off the progesterone by week 12, had an uncomplicated rest of my pregnancy, and delivered a healthy baby boy at 39 weeks.

This time, I had to start the progesterone at 4 weeks. Then my dose was doubled at 5 weeks. And doubled again at 7 weeks. This time around, I had a bad breakthrough case of covid right in the beginning of my pregnancy (didn't know yet) and it unfortunately has caused some damage to the placenta. The little bean was doing good on the ultrasound though.

Try not to worry too much. Sometimes you just need a little extra help until your body can get it's shit together. I wish you the best!
  • I’ve been taking mine since I ovulated since my lutheal phases were always too short. I’m told to continue until 12 weeks
  • I can't help with the success pregnancy story but I can tell you some symptoms of progesterone. I've been on and off progesterone since Oct 2021 for ART. It is designed to help tell your body to make your uterus a soft comfy place for baby to latch to. If estrogen and progesterone drop you get a period. Side effects can be nausea, headaches, irritation and bleeding, if using pessaries. When coming off you may get depression.

I have been on it since 3wks. I believe I am considered high risk due to MC history and age. At first I made me so nauseous but now I think I’m just regular nauseous. The first few days had some cramping and dizziness.

Just an update since I started this chain. Unfortunately, I did miscarry. I had a successful first ultrasound at 7 weeks with presence of heartbeat and normal measurements but had no heartbeat at 9 weeks. My doc said likely a chromosomal abnormality which could have been why my progesterone was low to start with. This is my first miscarriage and was shocking to say the least but I’m excited to move forward and try again. I’m awaiting a D&C as nothing has progressed naturally yet. Had blood work done yesterday and my HCg is still above 20k but progesterone is back down around 5 (I stopped the pills after we found out a week ago). Wishing you all a happy and healthy pregnancy! Just wanted to share my experience though hoping for happier outcomes for you.
  • So sorry for your loss—wishing you all good things in the future ❤️

Abbrooks11: I’m so so sorry to hear this. My 6-week ultrasound was also normal but tomorrow I have my 9-week and I’m pretty nervous about getting the same result. My symptoms have seemed to ease off a bit which I’m not taking as a good sign. I hope you will have much better luck next time it happens for you and that your wait is very short between pregnancies!
