Identical Twins

Anyone else find out they’re having identical twins? How are you handling the news? What are your worries and what are you excited about?

I haven’t been able to find too many discussions on identical twin pregnancies and thought I’d start! I am 8 weeks 5 days today and I found out 4 days ago through ultrasound that there’s two babies in there sharing 1 placenta! They’re monochorionic diamniotic twins. Both measuring perfect and strong heartbeats at 175bpm and 176bpm!

I was in complete shock when I found out but I could not be more excited. I am just wishing for strong and healthy babies! Trying not to google because there’s a lot of statistics that I’m not interested in seeing and want to celebrate this!

  • My first kids were mono/di twins!!!! Girls :) you are in for so many awesome things!!! Definitely consult with an MFM. It’s true that twin pregnancy is a different ballgame, but what a rare and wonderful experience both us and our kids get??? Congratulations!!!
  • I’m 8 weeks today with identical twins! Mine are also monochorionic diamniotic and I’ve been referred to an MFM. It was definitely a shock! I very rarely have periods (last one was last July) and had to go through fertility treatment to have my second child. This pregnancy was a surprise and then a double surprise when the ultrasound tech showed us twins! I’m also trying not to google everything and overly worry myself, it’s all in God’s hands!

Wow, congrats. I don't want to get anyone concerned, but that is what they told me too. They found two heartbeats, two babies, very early on after IVF was done, but since they transferred only one embryo and only one placenta was there, it was clear that it had to be identical twins, according to the tech. However, a few days later the doctor looked at the ultrasound pictures showing the supposed second baby and stated that the tech got it all wrong, that the second baby was just the first babies organs, which at that stage of pregnancy "hang" outside the fetus' body. He double checked doing an ultrasound himself and said that there is definitely only one baby. When I asked about the second heartbeat, he said she must have found my pulse somewhere, or somehow the babies pulse again. I was kind of disappointed, because by that point we digested the news and already told friends and family. Keep me updated how it turned out at your next visit, hopefully my case was just an exception!
