Re: Formula/ Food Discussion Thread

  • @runnergirl2018 ahh got ya.  I'm not helpful with the night feeding aspect because I BF at night until my supply tanked after I got some random virus, but I've heard that a lot of people do a mix at night.  We did keep some of the premixed bottles in the diaper bag at all times for back up though, and did use them a couple times when S was extra hungry or I was away longer than originally anticipated and he was hanging with the grandparents or something.   We were lucky with him and he never had any digestive issues or refused the formula.

  • @zwink1 with using formula intermittantly, what form did you find the most helpful without having too much go bad? canisters of powder? small bottles of premixed? something different?
  • @runnergirl2018 for intermittent use early on, I definitely found the small premixed bottles the most useful. They're certainly the most expensive option, so I wouldn't use them as a regular supply, but they were ready to use, didn't require refrigeration, were easy to toss in the diaper bag and carry around, and most of them come with sealed one time use nipple tops (as long as your baby isn't picky and will take them) so they're super easy to use.

Once we had settled on a long-term formula and were using formula more regularly, I carried premeasured formula in one of those 3 compartment formula containers and corresponding bottles of water and mixed as needed. That was also fairly easy, and is definitely more economical. The only problem with doing it when you're not using formula somewhat regularly is that you likely won't use all of the opened canister of formula before it goes bad.
  • @zwink1 thanks! that makes sense.  How long is a canister of formula typically good for once opened?
