1st Trimester

Is diarrhea a form of morning sickness?

Hi everyone. I am 5 weeks and 2 days, and for the past 2 mornings I have been having terrible watery diarrhea in the mornings. Have some stomach cramping with it. I have had occasional bouts of nausea so far, but nothing too bad. Im wondering if some women experience diarrhea as a form of morning sickness (perhaps in lieu of nausea/vomiting)?  My pregnancy is a result of IVF, so I have been very careful about what I've been eating for the past 3 months. So I don't think I've picked up any kind of bacterial infection from raw food, etc. Has anyone had this experience?
Thanks!
Laura

  • I would get diarrhea randomly too. But it’s always worth mentioning to your health care professional. It shouldn’t be an every day thing. Also know that viruses like norovirus are extremely contagious and cause diarrhea. So eating bad food wouldn’t be the only way to contract something.

  • @KoppyKat27 I tend to alternate between diarrhea and constipation the whole pregnancy, particularly first trimester.

Definitely call your doctor if you're concerned about fluid loss or dehydration, or if it starts to last too long.
  • Although morning sickness and diarrhea can both cause nausea and vomiting, they are two different conditions. Morning sickness is a condition that typically begins early in the pregnancy, while diarrhea is an infection of the intestines that causes watery stools.
  • I'm 4 weeks and 6 days pregnant and it's so comforting to know I'm not alone on this front. I have a sensitive stomach to begin with. I woke up at 2am a few days ago with diarrhea. It's been off and on the past few days since then but that watery kind your describing.

According to a couple articles I read it could be from all these hormonal changes and sounds like if the body doesn't like something it's moving it through quickly.

If you're concerned about becoming dehydrated I can recommend Pedialyte's powder packets. They come in a box and I add it to water or seltzer to make sure I'm replacing lost electrolytes and to boost hydration. I hope this helps and thanks so much for this post!
