1st Trimester

Doxylamine/Pyridoxine for nausea

Does anyone have any experience with taking Doxylamine/Pyridoxine for nausea? I'm basically bedridden with nausea and no appetite, I've lost several lbs this week, but I'm not actually vomiting. I wish I could for some temporary relief. I'm nervous to take a prescription, especially since I already have to take another medication. If I could take just one pill a day I would feel comfortable but the dose instructions are for 4. Any advice would be appreciated!

  • If your doctor gave it to you knowing what you’re already taking, my advice would be to trust your doctor. I have no experience with nausea meds but I know how terrible first tri nausea is. I hope this medication helps you and it ends swiftly. If you’re nervous about taking a medication, you should discuss it with your doctor.

  • Please trust your doctor! They wouldn't perscribe it if its not safe.  If you don't trust the medication talk to your doctor and inquire, or your pharmacist.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies. I did start, and the nausea has been better!
  • Diclegis (doxylamine/pyridoxine) is very safe during pregnancy-- it is one of the few drugs that has actually been tested on many, many, pregnant women and has no associations with birth defects, etc. Many women take it (including me) and it makes the first trimester manageable. I would not get caught up on the number of pills either-- the typical dose of diclegis is really low-- it's 10mg of doxylamine (over-the-counter unisom, which is also safe for pregnancy, is 25mg). And pyridoxine is just vitamin B-6! It's probably in your prenatal vitamin (at higher doses). It's really common for women to take two diclegis-- so I would really not worry about this one.

If you find you are having really severe nausea (like vomiting 5 times a day, can't work for weeks, etc) and having trouble staying hydrated, there are other medications you can take as well-- zofran and reglan. Zofran is usually the next line of defense, and it's a really good anti-nausea drug (and works right away). There is some small association between zofran and cleft palate, but for women with hyperemisis gravidarum (severe nausea  vomiting during pregnancy), often it's the only thing that gets them through all 9 months. I know women (physicians even) who have taken both doxylamine and zofran throughout their entire pregnancies (and had perfectly healthy babies).

I know it can be scary to take something during pregnancy, but please trust your OBs-- they deal with this all the time. And nausea during pregnancy can run the gamut from "a little queasy" to completely debilitating and requiring hospital stays. If your nausea is really severe, these medications can help!

  • My dr told me to start with taking just 2 at bedtime and that should be enough to elevate symptoms for the day… IF 3-4 days later you still feel nauseated then to add a pill in the morning and afternoon. I’ve been taking just the 2 at bedtime and I feel good for the most part of the day/early evening
  • I have been feeling nauseous all day long and the OB prescribed this drug. I ve started taking one pill (he prescribed 2 pills) at night to try out and it has helped.
