Prenatals and Supplements! ♡

Hello, Ladies!

I’m curious what Prenatals you all take!

Did your Doctor recommend one or let you keep yours. Did your Dr. suggest additional supplements? What about supplements for nausea or symptom relief? When do you take them?

Since we were trying, I already was on prenatals. Initially I had the Enfamom from Walmart, because it seemed like the best there without much for additives. The downside-they smelled like fish! I switched to a Ritual Subscription and I can’t recommend enough. In the back of my head I knew it was what I ultimately wanted, and I’m so happy I switched. The Ritual ones smell like actual fresh Lemon zest to keep nausea calm! They have a capsule within a capsule so they release when it’s best to absorb them and their ingredient sources are all listed. Their website has a lot of information I found helpful. I wanted to share this brand in case anyone is dreading taking prenatals like I did.

  • Hello and welcome! This question would fit in perfectly in our great big question thread or in the weekly randoms. We try not to do one off posts because they clutter the board and make it difficult to find those threads or other important ones. You can also use the search feature to search the board and see if this question has already been asked.
To answer your question, I take smartie pants capsules but I do not recommend as they make me gag and dry heave- although I’m not sure you’re looking for recommendations since you found something you love.
  • @meagan-firsttimemommy8-22 first, congrats mama! This is baby 4 for me and my drs have never recommended one but I guess I didn’t ask either. I take an mlm multi and omega by Advocare. I either take it in the morning and make sure I eat with it or it makes me nauseous or I take at night but sometimes that makes me have to get up and pee more often.

  • @paytonpedro Okay, I didn’t think is seemed to classify as a great big question, but perhaps the name could be changed to indicate inclusion of all random discussions including smaller ones and non questions, or the excess chains could be removed.  If the subject is too broad they seem to get lost a bit too, as opposed to reading through a chain on one topic. I will try to use the weekly randoms more-perhaps that is more fitting! :)

Thank you for your input on prenatals! I hope they stop making you feel nauseous when you take them! :)
  • @chellelin-34 Thank you! Congratulations to you as well! :) Thank you for your input! I’m curious what my doctor will recommend or if she will before I ask! I’m not yet 6 weeks, so have yet to have an ultrasound. I notice things affect my nausea more in the morning as well. Since I’ve always taken them in the evening, I’m now wondering if they affect me the same way! Lol
  • I think this is a great separate thread to have 🙂

I'm using Thorne's basic prenatal, Nordic Naturals prenatal DHA (thinking about switching), an additional 50mg vitamin B6 for nausea, and I've also kept up with my Jarrow Women's probiotic I was taking before. I'm a big vitamin junkie and actually dropped some herbs I had been taking when I found out I was pregnant.

I haven't had my first OB appointment yet so no discussions there. However, I'm thinking I need to up my vitamin D intake, so I'll probably bring that up with the doc and then choose my own brand if he agrees that I could use some more.

@meagan-firsttimemommy8-22 I agree with your comment about posting. Things get lost in the threads. I think it’s easier when new things pop up, people are more likely to look through the topics than all the comments trying to figure out which ones are reply’s and which ones are new questions. Just my opinion. ;)
  • @onlygooddays08 Thank you! I appreciate that!

Thank you for sharing that! I think I will plan to get some B6, as it seems to be helping many ladies with their nausea.

I haven’t had my first appointment yet either! That was scheduled today, so I’ll get to talk to her soon! I’m making a list of questions to ask, and a lot are related to supplements and vitamins and which ones are important to not have too much of. I’m currently taking a calcium vitamin D3 gummy in the morning and my prenatals in the evening. Since I have vitamin D in both, I’m only taking a half dose of calcium, but maybe I should have the full dose. I’ll look up more about ideal doses.

I hope everything goes well for you and your little one! ❤️
  • @chellelin-34 Thank you for that validation! I know everyone has different preferences, but it’s nice to know I’m not the only one who likes more clearcut threads that don’t get cluttered and buried so much!
  • @meagan-firsttimemommy8-22 I am so curious about the ritual ones! I keep getting served the ads online and clearly I'm a sucker because now I want them to but I wasn't totally sure if they were legit or not! So you reccommend??
  • @lindsaybelle YES!! Right now I can’t stand taking anything that tastes at all like vitamins, etc, so everything has to be a yummy gummy or fruity. Before switching to Ritual I was starting to dread taking my prenatal. It was fishy and big and I would hold my breath. With ritual, it’s refreshing to even just take off the lid and smell them. From day one I’ve just taken them before bed, so I can go to sleep if I get nauseous, but I haven’t noticed anything different than taking anything else for nausea. You could try it for a month and unsubscribe if you like too, but you’ll probably just really like them. If you look up top rated prenatal subscription brands, they are at the top of many researches- often #1 or #2 of those who test them. If you look at their website, the ingredients said where they all were sourced too. My Nurse at the OB’s office said they look good and cover everything I need for a prenatal (I take calcium gummies in the morning and B gummies for nausea now in addition.) Everything you see is legit. I have gotten my second batch already, and I am not quite for the first bottle. Very transparent brand! Also I just checked and you can get the first bottle 30% off right now which makes the first bottle $24.50 instead of $35. Also they have a money back guarantee and free shipping & cancellation anytime! I truly love this brand and I am in no way affiliated! :)

@meagan-firsttimemommy8-22 I purchased ritual based on all the reviews on here.

Question for the group: I currently don’t have one since I wanted to do my research. I’m supposed to get my Ritual ones on 1/12, I’ll be okay not taking one until then, right? I don’t want to do any harm by not taking any, but don’t want to buy a ton to have them go to waste. Thoughts?

  • Hi @brittanynmorris. I would consider picking up some cheap vitamins until they arrive. Or ensure you are eating plenty of folate and iron. From my understanding,  the earlier the better.
  • @Brittanymorris2006 I think what @kbtt202 suggested would be a good idea! I was taking one for a month or so, and when I ordered ritual, I still finished them before starting the Ritual ones. I just have 1/3-1/2 a bottle left when the new bottle arrives. I’ll plan to switch to their post partum ones before the baby actually arrives, and then when I switch to their Women’s essential vitamins, I’ll just finish the postpartum ones. So essentially I may just always have extra of the regular women’s vitamins on hand which I suppose is a good thing.

I think a multivitamin is a good idea because a family member/spouse could use them up and with iron & Folate supplements, they could be consumed at a later point too.

I would agree that even in worst scenario, that the prenatals get wasted, at least your little one has his special food to kickstart things!😊
  • I got some samples from my OB. The ones I liked ingredient-wise are over $100 a month! 😱 what a racket!!! And MH's FSA will only cover them if I get a prescription. I'm going to the OB tomorrow so hopefully he can write me a prescription for them.
  • @bridgiebee82 Oh wow! That is quite pricey! May I ask what brand they are? I hope you are able to get that prescription!! :)
  • @meagan-firsttimemommy8-22 they are called VitaPearl. They are really good and don't have any real funky tastes which I appreciate with the nausea. If I can't get a prescription for it, I will use another brand. I just can't believe the prices of vitamins! Like, do they want us to afford to have healthy babies??
  • @bridgiebee82 They sound really good! I agree! I think prenatals should be covered by insurance and the best quality should be encouraged!!! If you can’t get a prescription, I recommend the ritual ones I have. They are very clean with no fillers and stuff and they smell like fresh lemons, which helps with nausea. I don’t like most takes and smells for vitamins either, so I’m thankful mine kinda helps soothe that nausea.
  • @bridgiebee82 I take Actif organic prenatal vitamin. $42/ 90 days
It has everything my OB wanted me to take + more
They don't do anything for naseau but for the most part hasn't been an issue for me.
I have them on my Amazon subscribe and save.

"Actif Organic Prenatal Vitamin was voted the most trusted brand by clinical doctors and specialists in 2021. Actif is the only product with 100% natural-sourced, non-synthetic, non-GMO vitamins. Brought to you by ACTIF —the leader in organic health products."

  • And I'm sure they aren't the " only product with 100% natural sourced ..." blah blah blah. But nothing sketchy on the ingredient list!
  • @kbtt2022 Wow! That’s a good deal for 3 months! Even most of the cheapest prenatals at the store add up to more than that in 90 days!
