Baby Girl Name- Linnaea

I am almost due with my baby and I’m having some second thoughts about our girl name. We are waiting to find out the gender at birth so it’s possible I’m worrying for no reason if it’s a boy! We like Linden for a boy and Linnaea for a girl. This is our second child, our first is a girl named Dahlia. I like flower names but I’ve been through them all several times and the only one I like besides Linnaea is Azalea. We would pronounce Linnaea Lin-nay-uh and Dahlia we pronounce Dal-yah. Opinions?

Re: Baby Girl Name- Linnaea

  • Do you know if you’re going to have anymore children after these two? I wouldn’t use Linden and Linnaea together as sibling names because they are so similar they leave Dahlia out. So if you are two and done I think Linnaea and Dahlia are a cute set. But if you might try for a boy next and love the name Linden, maybe go for Azalea this baby? Seems like Azalea might be more popular between the two girl names but they are both great names.

  • Thanks for the comment. I’m not sure if we’ll try for a third or not down the road but I have thought about Linden and Linnaea being too similar for sibling names. Linden is the name of a tree and Linnaea is a flower that was named for Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus. The surname Linnaeus actually means lime or linden tree so Linnaea does too if you look it up. So they are very, very similar, since they even mean the same thing! I think if this one is a girl and we go with Linnaea and then we had a boy, we would find a different boy name than Linden and vice versa. I’m more focused on this one since I don’t know if we’ll even have another for sure.
  • Personally I’m not a fan of Linnaea and much prefer Azalea. Linden is very nice.
  • I agree, I like Azalea better. It’s easier for people to spell as it will be better known to people. Also my first thought with Linnaea was Linea negra, the line that shows up on your pregnant belly, which is how I’d probably spell it if you said it aloud.

  • Thanks for responding. I do like Azalea, although the z in it throws me a little but it’s very pretty. And I love the Azalea plant/flower too. I’m personally not too concerned with people associating Linnaea with linea negra but I am aware of the similarity. I hate naming, honestly, it’s so difficult, I worried for months when we were considering Dahlia with our first. Now I love the name more than ever and she could never be anything else, it’s so her. She’s wild and has such a fun personality. I’m just hoping the second time will be the same, I don’t want my child to always hate their name.
  • @meggyme that was my first thought too.
  • Add adding other uncommon floral names

    Acacia
    Lupine
    Iris
    Marigold
    Primrose
    Aster
    Magnolia
    Juniper
    Sage

  • I'm not a fan or Linnaea for similar reasons as mentioned by others. I do like Azalea, Iris, Acacia, or simpler flower names like Rose
  • Thanks for the responses. Linnaea is most likely the name we will use if it’s a girl after thinking about it more and after getting several very positive responses to it on another baby app.
