Chorioamnionitis & PROM

My water broke an hour after contractions began at 4:30 am - the day before my boy’s due date. We waited an hour before heading to the hospital where I found out I was still only 2cm. They immediately started me on pitocin due to my lack of dilation and irregular contractions.

I had an epidural later that morning and his heart rate started dropping after contractions. That’s when I began to shake uncontrollably. My temp hit 103 when I was diagnosed with chorioamnionitis around 6 pm. I was given antibiotics and told I could try to progress for six more hours but I was only dilated 5 cm more than twelve hours into labor. Then my blood pressure dropped to 80/40 while his heart rate spiked. I was told I’d need an emergency c-section and the NICU would attend the surgery.

Thankfully, baby boy was born healthy as could be at 7:45 pm (despite his temp being a little low.) I struggled for a few days and they considered a blood transfusion but I’m stubborn. Looking back, it wouldn’t have hurt…

The doctor on call who delivered my son said they weren’t going to investigate what caused it because I was “fine” when I came into the hospital, got sick during my stay, and started feeling better after the surgery and antibiotics.

I have lingering guilt and confusion since my pregnancy was such a breeze and now I’m sitting here with c-section guilt. I wanted a minimally invasive delivery and both of us wound up nearly dying while I felt like I was cut in half.

Has anyone else had this experience? Is my doctor’s lack of concern surprising?
