We have a 75+ bed NICU unit and anywhere between 25-35 RNs working per shift, so to make sure we aren’t ever alone and help is always nearby we have a “buddy” system. Well, my buddy today is an older RN who I’m sure has never liked me for whatever reason, and I’ve had it about up to here. Everything is a huge inconvenience for her. I’m pretty self-sufficient— it takes a lot for me to call for help— but I also don’t feel comfortable calling for her. One of her babies had a super low heart rate all of a sudden so I went in there to see if, you know, he was alive, and she got super pissed at me and left me to handle it by myself. If she had her way she’d sit in her chair at the computer for 12 hours but sadly it doesn’t work that way, and apparently today it’s my fault. Ughhhhh
Ugh @aloha_mama I’m sorry that happened today. I understand how important it is for the nurses to look after each other’s babies. I saw it a ton when we were there. Hopefully you don’t have to work with her often!
@Blondesweety444 I don’t, thankfully, but I was already having a bad few days and it just pushed me over the edge. For the most part my coworkers are excellent but those few that aren’t just ruin my day sometimes! I need to not let her have so much control over my attitude.
Haha ok so when I saw the name of this thread I thought bfest meant breakfast, and I was like ughhh I don’t wanna read about what people are eating for breakfast because it’ll make me vom. Finally got past my nausea enough to check, and realized that’s not what this is!!!
And @zamoraspin2 - I’m with ya on the insomnia etc keeping you up. I woke up at 4am and couldn’t fall back asleep. First had to pee then realized I was hungry, then thirsty, then later threw up. So…there’s that. Let’s hope tonight is a better nights sleep!
@alohamora how frustrating! Good thing you don’t have to work with her often
Ugh. So there's a backstory with this one...but in the middle of a pandemic, our illustrious hospital that everyone raves about decided to drop it's contract with the midwifery center. So at a time when no one wants to give birth in a hospital...one of the top out of hospital options has been gutted. They were able to reopen as freestanding, but can't take most insurances. They also went from 6 midwives and a number of nurses to 2 midwives and 1 nurse because many didn't want to take the risk or retired to keep their benefits.
The end result is that they can't keep up with the demand. For myself, this means their availability filled up while I was in the process of trying to switch to one of the few insurances they take (which I wish they would have told me I needed to reserve a spot while I was waiting for it to go through). 😭 So now instead of having my baby with the midwives and in the place that I know and love, I have to travel to another midwifery center over an hour away. (Good chance I'm giving birth in the van...I need to clean the van....)
@shlecks I was up before the sun today too because I had a dream that I was taking a shower in the dining room while my entire extended family was eating Thanksgiving dinner directly next to me, so yeah, no going back to sleep after that one. Ice coffee?
