2nd Trimester

Cervical stitch/cerclage

Hello. New here! I’m 24 weeks 1 day and yesterday they discovered my cervix was thinning, and I was having contractions. They were able to stop the contractions and put me on progesterone. I have an appointment tomorrow for a possible cerclage and I was wondering if anyone else has had one? Any advice? Thanks in advance

Re: Cervical stitch/cerclage

  • Hi! I just had a cerclage placed this past Tuesday. It was a pretty quick and straight forward procedure and it took more time for the anesthesia to wear off than the actual procedure itself. I had a bit of cramping and spotting in the hours following but was fine the next day. I am at just 14 weeks, so the hope is it prevents preterm labor that occurred with my last pregnancy at 24 weeks. Good luck with yours! Hopefully the cerclage helps keep baby in for several weeks longer. Keep us posted. XOXO

  • i had an emergency cerclage placed at 22+4 as within 12 hours i went from 2.5cm with funneling to 3cm dilated w bulging membranes. A lot of people that get it earlier or without dilation seem to do the best. A lot of people even make it full term. I stayed in the hospital for a week on medication to chill out my uterus. so far the cerclage has held for 2 weeks, they gave me a rough estimate of 3-5 weeks. Honestly just take it easy. You might feel sore/uncomfortable for awhile while you “get used to it.” If you keep having contractions make sure to go in to triage. Take some colace and drink lots of water so you don’t have to strain to go #2. i’m sure they’ll give you all the best advice as well.
