I really don't have any from my childhood that I am excited to share, but my DD (21 months) loves these: - Giraffes Can't Dance - anything in the Little Blue Truck series - The Bear Ate Your Sandwich - The Runaway Bunny - The Pout Pout Fish (I don't love this one, but she thinks it is hilarious) - The Big Red Barn
Hopefully these help any first time moms get their list started!
One I had for my DD, On the night you were born, reading it during pregnancy when I received it as a gift... awesome! Reading it to my brand new baby the day after I brought her home from the hospital
@jlbaker08 I love that one too. The last page about the trumpets and horns gets me choked up every time 🥺. I also really like Wherever You Are My Love Will Find You by the same author.
My son loves Moo Baa La La La and Little Blue Truck.
When each of us kids (I’m the eldest of 3) was around 6 or 7 my dad read us the entirety of the Narnia series, a chapter or two each night. I’m definitely going to do the same.
See The Yak Yak was a popular one! It was easy to remember so it was the first book I "read" as a kid but I really just memorized it and would flip the pages.
We read a lot of Disney books as kids. All of the classic stories.
Every year on Christmas Eve we read the Night Before Christmas. So I plan on buying our baby one of their own to continue that tradition.
Someone gifted us Wherever You Go My Love Will Find You at our baby shower for our first and I read that book at bedtime every night for almost a year. Have it all memorized. Still chokes me up sometimes.
@goldfishcraker what are your favorite French ones? I read French well but my spoken French is verrrrrry rusty, it’d be fun to read to my son in French. Good practice for me!
@rachelredhead My French isn't amazing. Haha. But MHs first language is French. So I'm trying. Practicing on kids is great! They are non-judgemental haha
Son's favourites are: Je t'aimerai toujours (Love you forever) Ou est mon chaton? Mon amour pour toujours. George (curious George) (Gruffalo in French as well!)
And he likes to bring me a bunch that are way beyond my abilities, so I struggle through them haha
I don't really like most baby books, but I LOVE big kid picture books. I did love reading The Going to Bed Book. Some of our other favorites are: Some Pets Duck, Duck, Dinosaur Giraffe in My Soup And lots of non-fiction
A favorite from my childhood that I've loved sharing with my LOs is The Little Fur Family. I also really like Emily Winfield Martin (love her artwork!) and have been gifting one of these for showers and first birthdays since we found them. (The Wonderful Things You Will Be, Dream Animals, & Day Dreamers.) The First 100 Words book with the flaps got a TON of use and I plan to buy a new copy as ours finally got torn to pieces. My 4 yr old now has us read 5-10 pages of an encyclopedia of animals before bed every night. I can't say I find the sections on microorganisms, flatworms, and the like enthralling after the 10th time but it is pretty dang cool to hear her talk about all the stuff she's learned. DS is a fan of Dear Zoo and Little Blue Truck. Honestly I spend way too much time and $ on children's books but my mom was a media specialist for the school system so I suppose it's to be expected.
I cannot wait until my son is older so that I can introduce the Harry Potter series to him!
My son is 3.5 and gravitates to all types of dinosaur books. Our collection has definitely grown!
He also loves the Room on the Broom, Gruffalo, Gruffalo's Child, all Berenstain Bears, Pete the Cat, and Little Blue Truck. Other favorites are Goodnight Gorilla and its sequel, 10 minutes till Bedtime.
@jennifer_m21 my daughter is 5 and have been thinking about starting HP books with her too. I tried Narnia but it was so slow that I stopped after a few days.
My kids love all types of books. They’re super into Star Wars so we have dozens of those and encyclopedias SW stuff.
We like Magic School Bus, You Must Never Touch a Dinosaur, Dragons Love Tacos, Pout Pout Fish, Pete the Cat, Fancy Nancy.
My daughters favourites when she was a toddler included “Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site”, “Someday”, “Llama Llama Red Pyjama”, “Yummy Yucky”, and “Time for a Hug”.
As she got older, she grew to like Oliver Jeffers and Peter Reynolds. Usborne See Inside and Look Inside books were also a big hit.
She’s now 5, and reading simple versions of Anne of Green Gables, Little House on The Prairie, Roald Dahl, Robert Munsch, The Chronicles of Narnia, Fancy Nancy, Judy Moody, and really likes the Usborne Illustrated Stories collections (Ballet Stories, Classics Library).
@abjm0325 We’ve been reading though the illustrated Harry Potter books together a bit at a time - the books are so beautiful! Literacy is big in our house, please do share some suggestions! I’ve already added some of your titles above to our next book pickup.
@Car0liiine I forgot about those books! My daughter learned so many words from them, and they always kept her occupied. She pretty much used them to shreds, I’ll have to remember to buy them again.
@luckyduck42 The lift the flap ones are so detailed - we didn’t find out about them until she was older, but I’m looking forward to getting some of the ones geared towards toddlers.

My daughter just turned four, and these have been some of our favorites (many of which you all have already mentioned!):
- The Little Blue Truck
A few of my favorites from growing up that I'm excited to introduce DD to as she gets a little older:
- Ramona
