Product Spotlight 03/17: rocking chairs & gliders

Hello! We are all at about the (more than) halfway point of pregnancy now, so we're probably at least thinking about serious furniture and decor projects! Maybe you've started putting your nursery together, maybe you haven't. Either way, to help the process along I'd like to launch a three-week Nursery Product Spotlight Series! We have already discussed the most important item, the crib, but there's plenty more to research and buy, and it's always nice to have guidance from others.

Week 1 (this week): Rocking Chairs and Gliders
Week 2: Other Nursery Furniture
Week 3: Nursery Decor

So this week I'd like to bring up the other big furniture investment aside from the crib: rocking chairs and/or gliders. This isn't necessarily confined to the nursery, but it's frequently where you'll find them! What brand and model do you have? What brand and model are you coveting? How about general guideline on style? Preference between rocking chair and glider? What features are absolutely essential (foot rest?) and which features are not really necessary (idk, a built-in mini-fridge like a LaZBoy)? Are there different materials to consider, depending on comfort and/or ability to clean?

And how about peripheral products for the rocking chair set-up: what lighting do you have around it? Do you have a side-table for your own drink or a stack of baby supplies? Any tips on placing it within the nursery space (e.g., close to an outlet so your phone doesn't run out of batteries at 3 am)? What was your experience with actual use--did you use it every day to nurse or bottle feed and now use it for bedtime stories? Did you not really touch it until you moved baby into nursery and spent more time there? Was it an ambitious purchase that never got used? Please share!

We had a rocking chair but I never used it until we moved to this house (9 months) and I began reading to him in it. I didn't like it for nursing as I preferred the couch/bed. Now I use it every single day with him and I absolutely love it. I have never slept in the rocking chair/glider and I wouldn't. The risk of dropping the baby is too high for me to feel comfortable with it. We had a mom in my BMB that this happened to and it lives forever in my brain. I'm a safe sleep stickler though so I'd feed and then immediately put DS back into his bassinet.

We have a rocker, glider, recliner for my son now. His first 3 months or so I don’t think I used it too much - only if we had company and I needed to nurse him in private. Once we transitioned him to his own crib, we’ve used it every day and continue to use it. We use it at nighttime for stories and prayers and what he likes to call “tickles” before bed. Some mornings if I have time or if he’s woken up early, he will ask for chair and we will rock, cuddle and/or read a story before getting dressed and ready for the day. Since we are still using his so much in his room, we just ordered another one for the nursery. It will be navy (oldest’s is a light grey). I would like to get a little side table for the nursery rocker this time since I didn’t have one with our first and was always struggling for a place to put bottles or pump or phone etc.

We got a cheap glider from Walmart for my first that has pouches on the sides to store books and things. We used it a ton and finally put it in the basement when DD was around 1 because she was so big is was getting super uncomfortable to rock her. She Loved being rocked and I loved sitting with her and watching her fall asleep. I was definitely sad when we outgrew it

We got a dutaillier glider and foot rest for DD’s nursery and I used it way more than I ever imagined. I nursed her in other places too but it was just nice to have a quiet, comfortable place to do so. I had a little IKEA side table next to it with the essentials for the intense nursing months. She also napped in my arms in that glider a lot in the first few months and it was perfectly comfortable for that. I really cherish those memories! And to this day we sit in it for a minute every night at bedtime. We’ll be moving it into the next nursery and getting DD a rocking chair, somewhat sadly. Just can’t justify spending that $$ again when we have one that’s so perfect for nursing.
