5.5 weeks, HR slow

Hi all, Just trying to hear some experiences and success stories. Just had my first prenatal appointment and they did a transvaginal ultrasound at 5.5 weeks. The heartbeat was 86 bpm. My dr said the heartbeat could have just started to beat and will repeat ultrasound in 10 days.

Thoughts??

Re: 5.5 weeks, HR slow

  • How did you have a transvaginal ultrasound that showed a heartrate at 5.5 weeks?!?!?  They don't usually do those until closer to 7 weeks, as a noticeable heartrate isn't likely to show up until 6.5-7 weeks along at the earliest.  Or are you actually 7.5 weeks along and now counting the 2 weeks before conception?

    My "Thoughts??" are:

You're lucky.  My 7 week ultrasound showed a baby that only developed until 5.5 weeks, and I was told to come back a week later... in which case they told me the baby hadn't progressed past that 5.5 weeks, I may be experiencing a molar PG, and was scheduled for a D&C to test the fetal remains, and that was my first MC of 5 with no living babies.  So, NO success stories here.  I think you should consider yourself VERY lucky that you were able to have such an early scan and that it showed such positive news, AND that your doctor wants to do it again in 10 days despite everything looking so great!  Most people don't get that level of care, nor that level of 'success' as you would apparently call it.  Appreciate your PG and that things are apparently going exceedingly well for you at this time.

October 2015 - 1st MC.  7-8 weeks along. Suspected molar PG, but luckily just a MMC.

    June 2016 - 2nd MC: 4-5 weeks CP

    September 2016 - 3rd MC: 4-5 weeks CP

RE 1: ALL the testing - 'unexplained'  "Yinz can do IVF or try on your own"

    Feb 2017 - 4th MC: 6 weeks

RE 2: More tests. Still 'unexplained.'  Called fat for an entire hour-long appointment, cried a lot

    Feb 2019 - 5th MC: 6-7 weeks

    IUD - March 2019-March 2023

RE 3:  Repeat all the tests. Hoping to try IVF.

  • Based on dates and growth 5.5 weeks is likely correct. I had an early ultrasound due to a previous early pregnancy loss. Thank you for your positive words and I know my anxiety is just in overload from the past experience. I am so sorry you went through that and know you aren't alone. Thank you for sharing your experience with me as well. Sending you love and hugs!
  • I think it's nearly impossible to hear a heartbeat at 5.5w! When I went in for my first scan I was around 5w. Didn't hear a heartbeat but I wasn't expecting one either. I came back a few weeks later and there it was, nice and strong. I think it's more likely that the 86 bpm was your heartbeat and not the babies.

  • With my oldest, I had to have an ultrasound for bleeding.  She measured 5 weeks 5 days, there was a good HB, but no one ever told me what it was.  I would think any HB before 6 weeks is a good sign, since it doesn't have to be there yet.  With my oldest son, at almost 7 weeks, he was barely measuring 6, and there was barely a noticeable HB.  (And I am confident of date, due to temping and all other ultrasounds showed he was farther along)
