because apparently I love looking at clothes this week, FB hit me with an ad for this brand and this stuff is SO cute and on super sale. I might not be able to help myself... https://katequinn.com/collections/super-sale?page=2 ETA and it's mostly gender neutral!

I’m obsessed with Burt’s Bees pajamas. That all DS wore as an infant (and even now, at 3.5). They are soft and wash up really well. They have occasional sales and I’ll stock up. Highly recommend, especially for warm climate mamas.
@claireloSC that wasn’t my experience. My little guy was always 98-99% in weight (he was quite a meatloaf for a while) and average for height and they fit great.
Ok cool I will check them out! I literally did not save a single baby item from DD because when my wife got dx w/cancer we thought we would have to be done having kids and I got rid of it all in a fit of sadness. Some shopping will be in order!

@claireloSC Goodness, that must have been so hard. How is she doing now? That website has the cutest clothes and bamboo looks soooo comfy. Makes me want to call and find out the sex so bad!!

@bobbyflies2020 two years cancer free as of december! at least a lot of the clothes are gender neutral so you can shop without knowing. I'm dying to know sex too, still don't have my results from my NIPT from 8 days ago.

FTM question- exactly how much baby clothes (newborn size) do I need? Is it a good idea to go ahead and shop for larger sizes too before the baby arrives, so I don't need to worry about it in the new baby haze? Is there any kind of checklist for like, what all the essentials are that I'll want to have covered? I'm so out at sea here!
@the_most_happy I think a lot of people say to not get too many things in newborn size because they outgrow them quickly. Depends on how big baby is coming out, too. Mine were in newborn for the first 1-2 months and I just bought about 10 used onesies and 10 used sleepers off ebay and it was just fine (winter babies). I bought 0-3 months ahead but only so I could hit sales. I was also a fan of the burts bees sleepers. My babies were pretty skinny and these fit the best (they have slim and regular or something).
@the_most_happy It has been 4 years, since my first, but here is what I remember. My method is to buy a lot used. Our washer/dryer is in the basement so I tend to buy a lot of used onesies in all sizes and a few nice ones for pictures/special occasions. You can choose to swaddle or use sleep sacks. We swaddled so we mostly stocked up on short sleeved onesies in all sizes. As soon as they sleep arms out, it is helpful to have long sleeved onesies that fold over the hands, to help with accidentally hitting and scratching in their sleep. So if you find used sleepers (Try to only buy zip-ups- Avoid snaps) or long sleeved onesies that go over the hands, buy them! (You can also buy cloth hand mitts but ours got lost really easily).

I thought I would be an outfit person, but I ended up putting my kids in zip-up sleepers 99% of the time because I found it way easier for diaper changes. So I had at least 14 sleepers (probably waaay more) for the early ages. I lent everything to a friend so I’m not sure 😬 You might really enjoy getting them dressed into outfits! It’s one of those things that you might not know your preference until you’re in it.
My first was 9lbs3oz, so he wore newborn home from the hospital and that was pretty much it. It was really great to have 0-3 onesies, pants and sleepers already on hand. We were also gifted a handful of 3-6 and 6-9 sleepers, which was nice to ease the transition into the next size up. I also found that I didn’t go through as many clothes during a week once they got to like 3-4 months? They were less spitty-uppy, not particularly droopy, and fewer blowouts. So they had less outfit changes during the day. And once they started eating solid foods I just fed them naked because they were easier to clean than deal with clothes covered in food.
Sorry, this was rambling! Just ignore me and read the baby list article and the helpful advice from others above 😂
My advice is don’t go too bananas on clothes for the early months. I did so much laundry because a lot of it is stinky and you don’t want it to sit for too long. The same things would get washed and put on top of the drawer, so that would be the first pick when we changed him. I remember changing out sizes and finding oodles of stuff I completely forgot about at the bottom of the drawer. 🤦🏻♀️
Side note- but I got little drawer bins and now store my son’s clothes folded in the Marie Kondo method. That helped that issue a lot. Plus I don’t have to dig to find a particular shirt. Highly recommend, especially for itty baby clothes.
Also... from a former Team Green mom... there are only so many grey lamb outfits you’ll want to put your kid in. I 100% dislike super gendered clothing but having ALL monotone neutral colors wasn’t fun for me, either. People will likely buy you a lot of gender neutral clothes before the baby is born so I would save the cute boy/girl outfit purchases for after the baby arrives and you can pick it out.
Signed, a mom who was tired of putting her son in grey or light green clothes for the first 3 months of his life.
I think I got lucky. We cloth diaper and had zero blowouts and she wasn't particularly spitty so we had one sleeper per day and were generally fine with the 6 pack of onesie/zip up sleepers or gowns! I would get maybe 50 to 70% of what you need and then get more cute stuff in size later too 😉
Mine was 8lb and we used newborn size for maaaaybe 2 to 3 weeks. 0-3 mo was much more useful. Def don't go crazy with newborn size.
@the_most_happy, I listened to a lot of other moms and did NOT stock up on newborn clothes with my first. I only had a handful of things because I assumed DD would grow out of them quickly. And then...she didn’t! She was in newborn clothes for 3 months. So, I ended up buying a lot of stuff after she was born. DS was the same way. But, then again, my nephew (who was born in October) was out of newborn clothes within three weeks. It totally depends on the kid!
Another mom where my kid was in newborn for at least 3 months. My experience was that I didn't buy any clothes until after he was born. Almost everyone at the shower bought him clothes even though we were team green.
DD was 9lbs6oz so newborn basically never fit her. I crammed her in a few for pics in the first week and gave up. I am not buying a ton because I feel like with an Aug baby I don't know what the weather will be like when she needs to size up. If she wears 0-3 for 2 or 3 months, it could be cold enough to go longer sleeves and sleepers, but if she grows out of it quickly like DD, it might still be pretty hot. So I just bought a bunch of short sleeve onesies for now and am going to just wait and see before buying much more. People do love to give clothes but hand me downs are great if any friends are offering. DD mostly had hand me downs for the first year or two so we saved out clothes buying for the cute stuff we really loved. I feel like 10 or so onesies is pretty good for the 0-3. We had more with the used clothes but she def didn't wear a lot of it.

Thank you all so much for all of this info! This is incredibly helpful just to wrap my mind around the basics and also get a sense of how much growth can vary. I actually had to google what "sleepers" are lol (why don't they just call them pajamas!?), so I'm not kidding when I say this is all new to me and every little bit of guidance helps. Post specific brand recs if you have them!
@the_most_happy I'm in the same boat. I thought sleeper meant sleep sack until I googled it. I'm also wondering about baby being too hot in those in August. I only saw long sleeve, long pant options. I live in Texas, and August is pretty toasty here.
@shoogapoff Yeah, DD slept in short sleeve onesies in the warm months, but we swaddled with Halo sleep sacks as a newborn so not sure if that will work unless you have AC. Our new house currently doesn't, but we might try to put in central air or at least do a window unit. Halo has cotton swaddle sacks but they are still pretty hot. Some use the muslin blankets for this but they don't stay put in my experience. Personally I'm def going to skip any long sleeve sleepers for the summer months since I'm due at beginning of month like you.

About 80% of DDs wardrobe has been purchased second hand from FB marketplace, mom groups and thrift shops. The rest is a mix of clearance or sales and gifted. She cruised through clothes so fast, it didn't make sense for us to spend much on them.
I’ve been able to go through all of our saved baby clothes from DD. I thought that I had more neutral clothing - I did not 😂. We’ve decided that we are done after this baby so I’ve donated/given away most of the clothes I had saved but it feels good to have it out of my house.

wow.. how many clothes from DD do you still have?
P.S. So many people liked what I've shared above that I think it would be nice to share https://kidy.eu/en/catalog/material/merino-wool/. Because there are not much sources with good merino wool baby clothes

I kept almost everything. 😬😬 we originally had planned on 3-4 kids so the thought was we’d have another girl eventually and then just reuse the clothes. After secondary infertility, a miscarriage, and how hard this pregnancy has been on my body (and the fact that they will be 7 years apart) we’re definitely done. I still have 2 large bins to go through but I got rid of 5 large garbage bags of clothes (newborn to 3T).
For newborn babies born in august, but probably spending time in and out of hot outside and air conditioned (although we just have window units so it’s not uniform) should I get some newborn side snap T shirts or the cotton side snap long sleeved tshirts because they have the fold over mitts? Or should I just get a pack of each. Do people prefer side snap onsies?
*my first 2 were winter babies and lived in fleece or thick zip up sleepers. I have some cotton zip sleepers so I’m just wondering about the tshirts/Onsies.
@Clobert I think the snap side shirts are fine. I didn't use the foldover much so I personally wouldn't miss it. The side snaps are good for the umbilical stump as well.

@Clobert for DD who was also an August baby we just did lighter/thinner clothing items. Like when we went out she was in a light onesie and pants/shorts. In the house we had her in one layer more than what we were wearing because of the air conditioner.
Can anyone recommend a hat that actually fits and stays on a newborn’s head and is cute? Those hospital ones work but I want a simple white one that’s easy to order quickly like on Amazon or something.
