Prolapsed cervix

Has anyone ever experienced or know someone who has experienced a prolapsed cervix during pregnancy. My ob discovered that I have this. I was/am having urinary retention. Urine culture was negative so uti was ruled out. She did an exam and was surprised to find my cervix prolapsed. She has never seen it before.

Re: Prolapsed cervix

  • I have not, I’m sorry. Did she say it was still closed even though it was prolapsed? Did she have any recommendations?

  • I’ve never heard of this but I would recommend getting yourself to a pelvic floor specialist like now.
  • I also recommend a pelvic floor specialist.  Ask online in local mommy boards.  It's a bit awkward because they literally have their hand inside you the entire appt, but it was well worth it for me.  Mine wasn't completely prolapsed but getting there I guess.

  • She said the cervix was closed, so that's at least good. She described it as a level 2 prolapse. She fitted me for a pessary, which is what is typically used for a prolapsed organ. She is deferring to my maternal fetal medicine specialist. I see him next in 2 weeks. I will look up a pelvic floor specialist!
  • Bntfroggie do u currently have a prolapsed cervix or was this with a prior pregnancy? Wondering if there were any complications from it?
  • @linsaywhat I had  one after my last pregnancy but it's been probably a year or more since I had therapy for it.  No long term effect, but they said mine wasn't awful.  I just felt like something was falling out of me sometime so they brought me in to check.  They were able to tighten up the pelvic floor muscles which is the issue, after you have a baby sometimes those just go to trash.  My first was a c-section so I didn't have this issue but I had a successful VBAC the second time and that's what did it.  I probably went to therapy once a week for about 3 months.

  • Thanks for the response. I am currently 17 weeks pregnant. My OB said she's never seen it but I should have clarified that I meant in someone who was pregnant. I did some research and found out that there is a urogynecologist through my insurance. I messaged my OB to see if she thinks I should go for a consult but waiting to hear back. Apparently my OB is familiar with her, so I'm sure she'll refer me. Thanks for your help!
