What are your nursery essentials?

Hello guys!

I'm due next month and it may sound too late to be planning a nursery haha but my partner and I will be moving into a bigger house next year which will have a nursery.

I have lots of things in mind but I just wanted to ask you guys if you have something in the nursery that you really recommend? I've read lots of articles but i'm still not sure.

Would love to see some pictures too!! <3

Re: What are your nursery essentials?

  • Honestly, our baby gear list is way different for the third baby than it ever was before.

This time I actually bought a changing table because the sofa table we used previously is actually in use. The changing table is the only thing that is really "ready to go" because I know we won't spend a lot of time in that room to start with.

We have a hand me down crib from the first two kiddos. It's set up but currently full of stuff that needs organized. I'm not in a huge hurry because I know we won't use it much for several months.

We have a rocker, a bouncer, and a swing. I don't plan to keep all of them but figured I'd wait to see what baby likes best before getting rid of anything.

Other than that, I'm moving a comfy chair in there and putting just about all the clothes in the closet. We used to use dressers but now we have excellent closet space and getting rid of the climbable furniture is a huge relief with one monkey child in the house. I also have a small basket of baby specific toys for tummy time.

Outside of the baby's room we have a pack n play to set up for the living room. I have a travel crib that we used as a bassinet, but this time I'm trying out a cradle first because neither of my first two ever slept well. Most likely the swing, rocker, or bouncer we keep will end up in another part of the house, too.

The most important part of our baby prep is a car seat, a cradle/bassinet or other safe sleep bed for in our room, and a place to store/change diapers. Even a stroller won't get much use for us before the spring because we live in a commuter area.

    Hope this helps!

  • Our nursery has a dresser (one side used for clothes, the other side has diapers/wipes/cream, spare crib sheets, etc) with a changing pad on top. We’ve got the crib, and a glider chair and ottoman for nursing. Beside the glider chair is just a small side table that I can set a nightlight on for middle of the night feeds/changes, or put snacks/water on, and will probably keep burp cloths there as well (our first baby had major spit-up issues and did it multiple times after each feed). We have a tummy time mat/gym on the floor, and a closet organizer system - in the closet we keep hanging clothes, sizes he hasn’t grown into yet, books, shoes, etc. Then of course we have a monitor, and a white noise/sound machine.

We will probably have #2 with us in our room at night for around 6 months though, and just acclimate him to the crib during his naps.

Oh also, the BEST feature of our nursery was a legit blackout shade! It helped our son with his sleep SO much when he was a baby and a terrible sleeper. We ordered a custom fitted shade from EZBlackout.com I believe, which lets in 0 light, and can be placed on/taken off with Velcro. Blinds and regular curtains just weren’t enough to get it dark in his room, and any hint of light would wake him up early, or keep him from falling asleep (he is much better about this now that he’s almost 3 though and doesn’t need it any more).
  • My #1 piece of baby equipment is a swing that goes side to side AND front to back.  I didn't discover this until my 3rd baby but it was a huge life changer.  We always keep it in the most active room of the house so if I need a safe place to put baby down for a few minutes it's on hand.  Baby cab also sleep in it as long as someone is close by to watch.
