Re: Weekly Randoms 10/4

  •  :# just testing out the fabulous board organization. Also, I’ve been awake since 5am and thought I could do something somewhat productive.
  • Loading the player...
  • @pickle-chips I was excited to see this had been started when I got up this morning! Very impressed we were able to organize the board so quickly and that there were so many early members around to get it the way we all wanted.
  • Yay for organization! I am a planner, in my personal life and at work, so I like having things organized. It was great to have several of us come together and work out the BMB logistics!

Traveling to my parents today. My dad had had a nasty eye infection (started last Sunday) that has caused loss of vision in one eye. By Friday, his blood work still showed more infection markers from Monday to Friday, even with 4 days of eye drop and oral antibiotics, so he went into the hospital. I am lucky enough I can work remotely, so I am driving down to help my mom, a teacher who had already taken a lot of time off for multiple doctors visits and an eye surgery last week. Once my dad gets home from the hospital, I'll drive him to doctors appointments and do his hourly eye drops. We are very worried he will have some permanent vision loss or even lose the eye.

On a positive note, I'll get to tell them in person about the baby. My mom will know as soon as I turn down a glass of wine tonight  :D I'll need to try to sneakily video for DH he is staying home with DS and will have too miss the big announcement.

Sorry to kick off our random threads with such a serious post, but unfortunately this is the random stuff happening in my life now.

  • @DoubleUp8 I’m so sorry to hear about your dads eye. That must be really scary for your entire family, especially him. This may be too personal, but do they know what originally caused the infection? Is he still working? If so, how much will loss of vision impact his job? - sorry so many questions!! It’s great you are working remote though and can provide some support to them. Also, yay for getting to tell your mom in person! I bet she will be so excited!

We have a small group of friends/neighbors we still see during COVID. My H keeps telling me they will all find out shortly because I can only “had too many last weekend” or “tomorrow is a work day” so many times before they catch on.
  • Sorry to hear about your father's eye
  • I approve of the use of Schitts creek gifs! 😆

I'm so happy that we got all organized too. I've seen comments of other BMB organization being a hot mess. I very much appreciate order and ease. TB is the only baby site where I participate in the communities cuz every time I go to the other sites it's a massive amount of HPT posts and "I hope to be in this BMB" people. It's not like you can ever truly plan what month you will be due unless you're doing infertility treatments. Plus those boards already have 1000 posts!

@DoubleUp8 oh my, sorry about your dad! My mom has had retinal detachments and man is that a tough 3 weeks of recovery after the surgery because you have to keep your head down at all times. Did they say when you'll know if there's any permanent vision loss?

@klj0228 I'm just avoiding all friends and family 😆 only 1 friend knows because she's been my support through the IF stuff so of course I had to tell her!

  • Thanks all! The infectious disease Doctors have tested some of the fluid that came out of his eye during a procedure he had on Friday, and they have identified it as a nasty type of strep. They have no idea where he may have caught it. The only thing he did differently in the week to 10 days prior to the infection beginning is get his teeth cleaned, but they say that is unlikely.

@inthewoods23 They haven't said when they will know about vision loss but I would guess that the longer he goes without seeing the greater the chances. He is working with doctors who specialize in retinas and they say that a lot of the current vision loss could be due to the swelling and all of the gunk in his eye from the infection. Yes, gunk is a very technical term.

He is still working, but has been considering retiring in the next year or two. He works with computers, so loss of vision would have a big impact on his life.

@klj0228 For hiding not drinking, I have found bottled root beer in a beer bottle koozie to be a great way to hide it, also the stemless insulated wine glass can be another great way to disguise what exactly you are drinking.

  • @klj0228 and @doubleup8 I'm pretty sure the drinking thing will be what makes us give it away to everyone before we are ready too!  My dear SO made plans for us to meet friends at a wine bar today, I was just like, really?  a wine bar?  you couldn't have picked a normal restaurant so it wouldn't seem quite as out of place that I'm not drinking?  Of all the patios to have to be hanging out on....I'm still trying to come up with an excuse, probably just tell them I ate something bad yesterday so stomach is off or something like that.
  • @DoubleUp8 that sounds awful! Now that they’ve identified it as strep, do they have a treatment plan? I hope your Dad gets some relief soon.

@inthewoods23 I’m convinced that there is a Schitt’s Creek gif for every occasion.
  • @DoubleUp8 I'm so sorry about your dad's eye, that sounds awful. So great that you work remotely and you're able to go help your mom!

@pickle-chips @inthewoods23 Also here for the Schitt's Creek GIFs! I was up at 5am so I watched the first two episodes of season 6 while DH and the puppy were still sleeping.

When DH woke up this morning, he rolls over and says "I started our baby registry" LOL! He is so freaking excited and its adorable. I am a ball of nerves because it's our first pregnancy and I'm terrified of everything, but he is doing his best to keep me sane. Also, I looked at the registry and he actually did a great job, go figure!

I also ordered my mom a coffee mug to make the announcement to her. We don't live in the same state as any of our family, so we're doing a vast majority of our announcements virtually. But we did decide to announce to our besties when we go to their house on Halloween. I have never been more excited for Halloween!

I've been napping all day and then we are taking my 4 year old son and my niece to a farm for some pumpkin picking

  • Alright ladies, talk to me about nail polish. Is it true that you shouldn’t get your nails done while pregnant? I’m really hoping to go get mine done this week!

  • @Maggie1202 I could be wrong, but I think the risk is about the fumes in the salon and the acetone to remove polish. If you have a well ventilated place, I would go for it personally. I have mine done right now but it is color street. My OB has never given me any directions to stay away from nail polish while pregnant, but I know OBs have very different opinions.

  • @ramzlau thank you! I feel like this is also one of those instances where mask rules come in kinda handy! 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • @Livvyloo87 ugh, yeah it's even more awkward when your in-laws complain about having to wear masks 🙄. My SIL once complained about wearing a mask at work and would be talking when the mask would suck in as if it were a plastic bag. Later I realized the people that complain are probably wearing them wrong because I have never had that issue. I think we can all agree this sucks, but just do it for the sake of others so we can get past this pandemic (which granted is not likely to be done for another 2 years). We're having more positive cases a day here in my state than any previous month of this pandemic.

Which reminds me - we should probably have a covid thread to discuss precautions, etc so that stays in one place so those that don't want to talk about it can avoid it in the various check-ins.

@Maggie1202 I think as long as you're not having your nails done every week/2 weeks it's fine!

On the topic of "safe for pregnancy", what about salicylic acid? I've seen one reference to it being a no-no, but others I've read say maximum 2% (which is standard anyway). I just wanna know if I can use my AHA/BHA peel from The Ordinary. I'm also really glad I ended up not buying a retinol to start trying!

  • @inthewoods23 I know there is an app that grades products safety for you during pregnancy, but my pregnancy brain has already kicked in and I can’t remember anything. I was wondering about my face wash too. Maybe a lurker from another board can help us out?
  • @Maggie1202 I would get my nails done if it is a well ventilated place. It’s something you can keep doing in your normal way while pregnant.

@inthewoods23 I like the covid thread idea. We have one in my old BMB (still communicate daily with those ladies) and it’s nice to be able to look at it when I want, but also avoid it on days where one more covid thing is too much.

@DoubleUp8 I’m so glad to read your update. Glad you are spending time with your family and that your dads swelling is going down.
  • @DoubleUp8 that's great news! I hope he's feeling even better when you see him today.
@inthewoods23 love your use of Moira Rose in the question thread!
  • I just wanted to quickly say a big thank you to all the ladies who jumped in and got the threads organized, you guys are awesome!

@DoubleUp8 glad you're seeing some positive improvement with your dad!
  • @pickle-chips ME ME ME! I have refreshed this board more times today than I can count! I have no motivation and I can’t concentrate for more than about 20 minutes at a time! 😩

  • my entire family lives 1000+ miles away from us, but my parents recently bought a house 1.5 hours from us. Planning to move here full time June of next year at the latest. My mom came down to have lunch with me today since they are heading home at the end of this week. I considered telling her today, because I didn’t get to tell her in person with my first, but decided against it. I am still just not ready to tell people for some reason. My husband and one of my very close work friends are the only people who know. I only told her because I was sitting in her office crying about every little thing so I had to explain the strange tears. I’m really hoping we can hold out to telling any of our family until Thanksgiving. Or at least until I have been to the dr and have a report of healthy pregnancy.
  • We’ve already told my mom / her husband and my dad / his wife (to be on Friday!) and DH’s mom / her boyfriend.
They will be our support if anything goes wrong. Plus I was having a really hard time wrapping my head around this one since it’s #3 and a huge surprise so having my mom on my helped calm me down. Plus everyone would be wondering why I’m not partying on Friday !
We are waiting longer before telling other family / friends.
  • @klj0228 that's exciting that they are moving closer (possibly?)! And Thanksgiving isn't too far off, hopefully you have a great visit with the doctor and you'll be feeling more than ready to tell them then.
  • I wish we lived closer to my in laws and less close to my parents lol.
  • Ok.. I just had my first beta bloodwork done today.. my results were 664. Is that a good number?? I will have another done in a few days on Sunday to see if its going up and doubling. FX it is.
  • @mindyb2019 yes that's good!!!! We have the same due date right? I just got mine back from yesterdays draw mine have been, Friday-39, Monday-158 and Wednesday 320
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @ruemcclanahan yes we are due date twins lol 🙂 ok yay!! Im glad it's a good number. Thank you girl. Your numbers are going up nicely 👌
  • @DoubleUp8 I know it’s only been a couple of days, but how is your Dad doing?
  • @pickle-chips thanks for asking. He is home and staying to regain his strength after being in a hospital bed for 5 days. He has still not regained sight in his eye. The doctors are concerned that the bacteria that caused the infection produced so many toxins in his eye so rapidly that they did permanent damage. We are still trying to be hopeful, but trying to come to grips with this possibility. It's just such a freak thing and happened so quickly.
