Fall 2020

Re: Fall 2020

  • Hi mamas - how is everyone doing?  @mccurleya How is it going settling into your new place?  And being back to school?  @megpeg How are you and your kids liking home schooling?  @shoretobe How are you and Darby and Maeve and life as a family of four?

All is well here. We found out on Tuesday that I DO go back to work the day after Labor Day, so it's now a mad rush to prepare for that. I'm simultaneously more excited than I've ever been to go back to work and CRUSHED at the thought of leaving Nora and Murph. Maternity leaves and summer breaks have taught me that the dread of returning is always worse than the reality, but I'm in the thick of it now.
  • @ashtuesday good luck! All the feelings have to be rough.
We are doing pretty well with homeschooling. We are in our second week and also camping yesterday through Monday. I am by myself with the three kids and two dogs and it’s a little rough but my husband comes tomorrow night and hopefully will be a little relief. School is a little rough when both kids need my help but we get through it. My oldest had a hard time this week knowing his friends were going back and he wasn’t but then we made ice cream for a science experiment and Tuesday’s work only took three hours to get done.
Tonight I was trying to cook dinner at the campground and my 12 yr old was supposed to be watching Declan and apparently got preoccupied. a man slowed down his truck to ask me if the little guy running down the road was mine😳😔. We are also only maybe 20 ft away from a 10ft drop off into Lake Huron because my husband thought that would be cool when he booked sights. Nope, it’s not with a 2 year old.

  • @megpeg Oh my God, you are a rockstar for solo camping with your whole crew!  Any solo outing with kids + dogs intimidates the heck out of me.  That sounds like such a fun getaway though - have a great time!
  • @ashtuesday I feel for you. Going back is always hard. I had a hard time starting back just because I had so long to stay home with Nate. But I adjusted quick. The house is still great. Trying to get rid of a roach problem though because they have attic closets upstairs that are open to the outside instead of being sealed so they’re coming in. These people we bought from  did not think when they did things. As far as school, it’s going pretty well. I’m teaching from home for two weeks right now because our preschool shut down due to a Covid case and daycare won’t let Nate come because of it even though we weren’t in contact with that person. So I’ve been teaching through Google Meet while my para facilities. It’s been interesting.

@megpeg sounds pretty, but definitely wouldn’t want to stress about having extra sight on a 2 year old that would gladly jump off that cliff.
  • Sorry for being MIA - you are all amazing with all the school things you’re doing.
@mccurleya are you back in person now? How is the house?
@ashtuesday I fully understand - with Maeve I was ready to go back to work, this time - having the summer off with them I really wished I could work part time, but that’s not an option for us. How is your school year?
@megpeg are the older kids still home? How have they adjusted.
We’re still “no potty” over here. Maeve started preschool and LOVES going even if she can’t really tell us too much yet. She just says “a good day”.
What’s everyone doing for Halloween? The girls have costumes, but I’m not sure what we’ll do on the actual day.
  • My older kids are still home and although my 12 year old acts like he doesn’t like it he wrote a pen pal letter today and said it’s really fun he just misses his friends. My daughter loves it.
Declan will go on the potty sometimes but won’t wear underwear or even entertain the idea.
We trick or treated camping a couple weeks ago and will go out on Halloween. My oldest is a ninja, my daughter and I are Mal and Maleficient from descendants, and my husband and Declan are wreck it Ralph and fix it Felix.

  • Adorable costumes!!
I’m not pushing the potty - she’s showing more interest so I’m waiting for a weekend we can wear training pants to see how that goes. Maybe the long thanksgiving weekend?
I love that your son wrote a pen pal letter. I get missing your friends. Life is just so weird now.
  • My other two didn’t potty train until right around their third birthday so I figure he will be the same.

  • That makes me feel a lot better. Thank you!!
  • Hi mamas!  All is well here.  It feels good to be back at work and, while things are a bit chaotic, it's actually been going well having kids back in person.  Nora and Murphy started back at day care last week and that has been WONDERFUL.  To see them interacting with their friends and having their own time to shine away from each other - it was sorely needed.  Of course, they've been back for a week and we all have a cold already, but it feels like a small price to pay.

@shoretobe Nora's using the potty about twice a day here (when she wants candy).  We haven't pushed her since our big attempt over the summer.  We might give it a go around Thanksgiving again, like you said?  While I WANT her to be potty trained, it'll happen when it happens.  What costumes did you get for your girls?  How are you all doing creating a new routine as a family of four?  I feel like it took a solid 7 months for us to get into a groove after Murph got here!

    @megpeg Those are adorable costumes!!!

Murphy is going to be Elmo and Nora is going to be Belle.  Or anyway, Nora asked me to buy her a Belle costume... which she refuses to wear.  I told her she'd have to wear it if she wants to go trick or treating and get candy and she said, "No, Nonna will give me treats."  Which is true.  I hope to take them trick or treating - Nora refused to leave the house last year, so at the very least, I'll take Murph - and then we'll stop by my mom's house.
  • @ashtuesday same here on the costume. Declan will wear the shirt and jeans and boots but won’t carry the hammer or wear the hat. He didn’t want anything to do with any of it while we were camping.
