Re: First Trimester screening/NIPT/NT etc discussion

  • Haha ain't that the truth!! It was the NIPT specifically I was reading about/ referring to.
  • Sorry you are dealing with all that! So frustrating. Hope the new company works out better for you!

  • I’ve been meaning to post on this thread because I am experiencing something really cool. I had my first baby in Florida with private insurance provided by my employer (where we are from) and now we are living in the U.K. & I am having this baby here and on the national health service (NHS). It’s all overseen by midwives. I am pleased so far with my care, and on Friday I had my first appointment at 12 weeks. It included an ultrasound to date the pregnancy but they also checked for nuchal fluid. I also had the option while getting the standard bloodwork/urine test done to add to my bloodwork testing for downs, Edwards, and patau syndrome. (Well it’s a “screening” and not a definitive answer). I thought that was SO COOL! In Florida, that test was an extra out of pocket expense and it only went up in price if you decided to do something more sophisticated like the Harmony test. For our daughter back in Florida, we opted not to do any testing because the out of pocket expense was ridiculous & insurance wouldn’t cover because I didn’t meet any parameters. Anyways..... I opted to add the screening this time around since it was included. I’m waiting back on the results! I’m so very pleasantly impressed! Rock on, NHS!

  • My NIPT last time was accurate. I didn't realize that there were that many false positive.  I'm having my blood drawn tomorrow during my MFM visit for the NT scan. I'M SO EXCITED.

I had a NIPT with my first and am having one tomorrow for my 2nd.  The results with my firstborn came back inconclusive because it had turned out that I had a "vanishing twin" early in my pregnancy.  I was beside myself with worry that something was wrong and honestly couldn't even enjoy my pregnancy until after my 20 week anatomy scan, when everything looked good (and I went on to have a perfectly healthy baby).  So for any mamas who get an inconclusive result or maybe even a positive result for a genetic abnormality, take a deep breath-- it does not always mean the worst  (I will be repeating this to myself at my appointment tomorrow!)

  • So my NIPT came back inconclusive but due to my and my husband's ages I am deemed high risk and need to meet with the genetic counselor. I did ask why I wasn't given the NT scan and was told that the NIPT is so accurate they don't bother with the NT scan and just wait on the anatomy scan at another hospital (the same one with the genetics counselor and the MFM specialists). With the inconclusive NIPT I am going in on Friday for the NT scan to see if we can at least get some sort of screen done. I'm a little annoyed that the NIPT didn't come back with anything except a determination that I'm likely to be carrying a genetic mutant because I'm old. Thanks. NOT HELPFUL.
  • @kloe818 ugh how frustrating! I know it's not terribly uncommon to have an inconclusive result (I think there was a poster earlier on this thread who had that experience with their last pregnancy), but still frustrating. I'm glad they're at least doing the NT for you now (and I've heard that the NT can sometimes pick up on things that you wouldn't know about from the NIPT- my doc still recommends both). Hope you're able to get some answers and reassurance soon!

  • I received my NIPT results back and I’m low risk for everything thank goodness. I’ve been so worried but can now relax. We were also told we are having another boy. So happy. No more tests now until week 13 (end of first trimester scan) which is a week and half away.

  • My NIPT came back with not enough baby DNA to do the analysis ugh. I went at 11 weeks but I guess my weight might be the culprit? Anyway having a NT scan asap and some more bloodwork. I just want to relax!

  • @treebagel I'm sorry, that's so frustrating.  Are they re-doing the NIPT bloodwork, or a different test? And good luck with the NT scan!  The waiting for results and wondering if it's going to be okay is so tough, I hope you get some reassuring good news soon.
  • @cmortmain I actually didn’t understand completely, but I think it will be slightly different? I believe I’ll be getting the sequential screen now (which is the NT scan plus bloodwork done twice....?).

  • @treebagel I also had insufficient baby dna for the NIPT and was told that being over 220 pounds and being on Lovenox (blood thinner) is the reason it came back as bad as it did. My doctor had me talk with a genetics counselor who told me that the NIPT company sent my results based on my age and the percentage of baby DNA (which was 2.5% instead of 10% which is apparently a marker for genetic issues) which had me at a 1 in 17 chance of having a baby with a chromosomal abnormality. Once the genetics counselor saw my weight and my medications she wrote that test result off. She called my OB and asked them to get me in ASAP to do a NT scan and that looked normal. We'll be doing amnio in 2 weeks. There were other screening opportunities that, due to my age, would likely show a false positive as well.

  • @treebagel and @kloe818
I also had low fetal dna. As you may have read earlier that was my second issue with that company/genetic test. After talking to genetic counselor I switched to a different company and lab. They only got 4% fetal dna on this one but it was enough to get results. No concerns from NIPT and we are having a boy! Good luck and I hope you get answers soon. They also told me they thought my weight was the main factor.

  • Got a low risk result today. And I only have to pay $249 if I pay promptly. Otherwise it is $1,590. Ridiculous.

  • Had my NT today and it was normal! Also redrew my NIPT so I’m hoping we get results this time to confirm everything is ok. Genetic counselor said that baby aspirin, progesterone, and increased weight are all factors in low placental DNA. I had 1.6% and the test requires 3%. but indicators of chromosomal abnormalities usually get much lower at 0.2% or similar (except for T21, that usually has normal DNA %).

  • @Yiggle09 So glad you got some reassurance after your NT scan.

    I don't think I every updated here.
Our NIPT results were very low risk for all the abnormalities it tests for.

  • @treebagel congratulations!

I had my second tri screen yesterday its called a quad screen blood test. Not exactly sure what it does but it happened lol
    manillabarjuliebeannn
  • I was supposed to have my amnio today but no one told me to stop my blood thinners and the MFM doc was not comfortable doing it. So I will now be doing the quad screening as well @Yiggle09
We did get to see baby though, and the sonographer TRIED to see the sex but someone was sleeping on their side and was not cooperating. Also the heartbeat was around 145 instead of the 165 it's been in the past few appointments. Is that normal in 2nd trimester? The sonographer and doctor weren't concerned. Having had 2 losses, I AM.
  • @kloe818 I feel like no one ever thinks of telling us to stop blood thinners, which is extra hard when our normal prenatals contain them!!!! One of my friends was doing a FET and was having breakthrough bleeding, I reminded her that fish oil is a sneaky blood thinner!

Also, I did some quick research, and it seems that it is absolutely normal and ideal for the heart rate to slow a bit past 9 weeks, and you're still well within the normal range.

  • @mvt2003 Thank you! The sonographer said as long as baby was within normal ranges it was OK. I just figured it was consistent throughout the pregnancy, not really fluctuating.
  • @kloe818 yeah it can definitely fluctuate a lot so as long as it’s in the normal range, then you shouldn’t be too concerned. Glad you got to see the baby! That’s always reassuring.
