Gestational Diabetes, you unpleasant wench

I was just diagnosed. I had it with my 1st as well. Yay for frequent finger mutilation and occasional (hopefully not every day this time around) insulin shots.

@Liz1485 I was recently (a month before I found out I was pregnant), diagnosed as pre-diabetic. The fertility centre I was going through ran a billion tests on me to find out potential causes of previous miscarriages and that was one of the things that popped up (among other things). I was prescribed metformin three times a day, a low GI diet and more exercise. I’m only 125 pounds so it was a surprise to me. They also told me the metformin is said to increase fertility and then once pregnant, it is said to help prevent miscarriage. I thought it was pregnancy game over for me for a few months until I made all the changes advised and the meds helped lower my blood levels And started actually working as they should. The specialist told me to come back in a few months and then we talk about trying again or consider ivf. But unbeknown to me I must have already conceived again this time before the prescription arrived in the mail and I was taking it a few weeks before I realised I was pregnant. Maybe the specialist is correct about metformin helping because after 3 early miscarriages in a row earlier this year, I’m still currently pregnant in my 7th week now. So fingers crossed all goes well. Not sure if I’ll develop full gestational diabetes. I’m still doing my research into what ‘pre-diabetic’ means and how that’s different to other types of diabetes. It’s all new to me. Are you type 1? I think it looks like I’m on the borderline of type 2.
  • I tested as pre- diabetic when I was a teenager, but my sugars have been under control until pregnancy. I tested a couple times a year since my first was born, since it was really bad when I was pregnant, but all was normal. It’s been over a year since I tested (I moved from ca to wa and have yet to find my testing kit.) I told all this to my doctor and she wanted to test really early (my son had issues regulating his blood sugars for the first couple of days after he was born and had to stay in the nicu for 7 days.) So they wanted to test me early, and I was fine with it. I don’t know if I had gotten diabetes before I was pregnant and just didn’t know (I say it like it’s something you can catch lol) or if it’s just from pregnancy. My first appointment for that will be on August 17th, so I suppose I’ll find out more then. I really hope there is some sort of pill I can take, if I need to take insulin again. I really hate needles.
