Going to a "stop by and say hello" baby shower today. Hopefully not too many are there when we stop by, this is my closest "cousin" from my Stepfather's family, the first besides me to have a baby (with many more to follow). I shipped the gift awhile ago but never got any confirmation she received it (maybe they're waiting until today to actually open them). I'm going to print a picture of it and put it in the card along with an Alphabet book of powerful women. FX it's not a shit show!
There’s been quite a few announcements of pregnancies on my Facebook and since we are deciding to wait because of my job, I feel like I’m hiding the baby and I hate it.
@jbal918 I have seen a lot of announcements on social media lately too! I don't think you should feel bad about not sharing though. We never announced on social media the first time and don't plan to this time either, so it doesn't feel odd to me to not share it there.
@jbal918 don't feel bad about not posting on social media. We didn't post anything until DS was born and that's our plan this time as well. I'm going to tell my boss this week, and then start slowly telling more people at work. It's weird this time around since I'm not in the office.
@karmba yes! Telling people was like “hi, haven’t seen you in weeks, by the way I’m pregnant” 😂😂😂 Speaking of work- I’m taking the afternoon off. I’m taking my little dude to the lake.
It's so weird to think that probably no one at work will see me pregnant! We're most likely working from home until January.

@gingkomama and @karmba I legit cried yesterday about it. I guess it’s not so much social media but telling people in general because I’m afraid word can get around to work. I’m waiting till mid-August or when I have to go to work a for a meeting and they see it lol
My anatomy scan is tomorrow and I’m so anxious/nervous/excited! Bummed my H can’t go. We’re going to do the gender reveal tomorrow evening on a Zoom with all our family. I bought smoke bombs to light off. Hopefully the people at the US place can help out in giving me the right ones to use. Although there’s secret instructions on how to tell the difference between the bombs, one set looks more pink and one set looks more blue....I think I’ll bring two solid colored bags that they can put the bombs and we won’t pull the right ones out until it’s time to light them. Ahhh I can’t wait!

So starting off by saying that I wish my OB office had called with a reading of these results today vs pushing them into the patient portal without explanation.
My early GD screen came back high - glucose levels of 183 😭 waiting to hear from my dr on next steps. I assume it’s going to be the more intense 3-hour screen but I’m not sure if they’ll just refer me over to a specialist.
Also, got my triple-screen results. My AFP MoM was 2.34. I think that means negative per google which says anything under 2.5 is negative.
Also the Trisomy 21 ratio is 1 in 393. I think that’s also negative - coupled with my negative NIPT result I’m not worried about.
anyone with past experience or knowledge of these #’s your insight would be amazing! Not looking for medical opinions, just let me know if you think I’m way off base with my thought process.
We haven't announced anywhere on social media yet either, honestly I'm a little facebooked out lately and haven't been posting on it much 🤷🏻♀️ . We might post something after the anatomy scan family gender reveal but idk for sure.
@shelmcclel For GD,120 is after two hours and I *THINK* 150 after one hour so it’s not too far off! A lot of women fail the one and pass the three hour! I had GD with DS and now again but if you wind up having it, it’s not as bad as people make it seem! There’s nothing you can do to change it and nothing you did to make it happen. It’s all our wonderful hormones lol
@shelmcclel What?! They didn't explain any of it to you? Yes, they definitely should have called you. Can you send a message through the portal asking for more information?
What is everyone's take on drinking coffee?? I used to drink it everyday, and when I got pregnant I stopped, but over the past two months I have been having 6-8 oz about 2 to 3 times a week. I am worried that I am doing something wrong, like I'm harming my baby...
@lindsaym2106 I've switched to decaf. Caffeine gives me heartburn when pregnant. I drink decaf coffee, decaf tea, and caffeine free soda when pregnant. Soon as baby is born I'll switch back.
@lindsaym2106 I was told that 200mg of caffeine a day is fine, which is about what's in a cup of coffee (it varies by roast, type, etc., but generally what's in a cup). I've been drinking a mug a day, which is about what's normal for me pre-pregnancy. For a while I cut it down to half a cup, but that was more because I wasn't that into the bitter taste for a while. Really it's excessive caffeine intake that's bad, if you make a mistake and have 250mg one day I doubt it'll do anything. However, if you drink 5-6 cups a day, that's not too great.
EDIT: 200mg is what's in about 12oz of coffee, give or take, not one cup (I was thinking 'mug'). The APA site is more cautious, though notes that most doctors say moderate use (150-300mg/day) is safe.
@lindsaym2106 I drank a cup a day during while pregnant with DS with no issues. This time around coffee hurts my stomach so I've been getting caffeine by drinking tea.
@lindsaym2106 I switched to decaf for a while, until I realized I needed caffeine When I make my lattes in the morning I use one decaf pod and one full caf pod. I rarely finish the whole drink. I've switched to caffeine free soda's for the day if I have one.

@lindsaym2106 I have coffee almost every day, sometimes a Coke zero which I’m usually addicted to but have not been as good to me since I’ve been pregnant. Most times I don’t get through the whole thing. I try to make it a latte to get the calcium from milk. You can easily find out how much caffeine is in what you’re drinking via google.
@gingkomama I know it’s crazy to me! I was thinking they’d call today - haven’t heard a thing. I just left a VM for the OB nurse. Usually she calls back fairly quickly. If I need to do more GD testing I want to know and try to get it done this week because we are going out of town on Sat.
Jumping in on the caffeine talk- with DD I gave it up right away until my OBGYN said there was no reason to. She said not to go crazy but 2 coffees a day should be just fine. I was a MUCH happier person to bring it back into my life 🤣
For this one I continue to have caffeine. I usually have 2 (3 max) shots of expression a day, this is my normal amount. In general expresso has a bit less caffeine then brewed coffee, and I prefer it. I don’t have any other caffeine intake.
@lindsaym2106 Check out the book Expecting Better by Emily Oster. She reviews all the research available on various types of advice given to pregnant women so you can make an informed decision about which risks (or lack of risks?) you are comfortable with. After reading it I've decided I'm totally fine eating lunch meat occasionally.
@ginkomama I eat lunch meat, when it sounds good and feta cheese. I think the lunch meat restriction is more aimed towards balogna's etc because of the high sodium. And most feta 's in the us are pasturized.
In case anyone was wondering - just following up on what my test results mean. OB called, neural tube defects were negative and the 1 in 393 ratio is apparently the lowest risk reported (by my lab anyway) - it was not related to Trisomy 21, so I was wrong! They didn’t do any more trisomy tests since I had NIPT and NT U/S. I’m relieved! But I’m here for the 3-hour glucose test this morning 😩
@babymakes9 For lunch meat it's listeria (or other foodborne pathogen, but from what I remember listeria is the one that can really cause problems), and with cured meats both that and nitrates. That said, no one except some friends ever mentioned nitrates, so I'm not sure how bad it really is. I think it may be one of those things that's not that great for you anyway, so just be careful. For listeria, while it's shown up in deli meats and soft cheeses, there have also been outbreaks linked to all sorts of foods (lettuce, cantaloupe, frozen vegetables, etc) that we'll definitely still eat. Looks like the only outbreak reported so far this year was enoki mushrooms, but it looks like it's over.
Most soft cheeses I've found at the store are pasteurized, so I've been eating them. I've also been eating lunch meat occasionally, but I always like it heated anyway.
@shelmcclel Glad to hear the lab results were all ok! I've noticed that my doctor only pushes them to the portal once they've reviewed and know it's all ok. Otherwise they'll hold it until they can give me a call. That sucks about the glucose test, hope it goes by quickly.
@babymakes9 and @akoros I avoid lunch meat and deli items due to listeria. It is rare but has a higher incidence in these foods and pregnant people have a higher rate of infection and the listeria can cross into the placenta. If I were to crave lunch meat I would just microwave it and that enough to kill the bacteria. I know that Hormel foods pasteurizes some of their lunch meat, so those are safe. With deli meat pre-sliced or sliced at the counter there are a lot of chances of contamination. We started roasting or smoking turkey breast- it is way cheaper then lunch meat and makes a delicious sandwich. As we know it’s cooked thoroughly and in our fridge it’s a safer bet then pre cut or deli lunch meat.
Also any pasteurized cheese products are totally fine, and most cheese (soft or hard) in the US is pasteurized by law. This was more difficult for me when I lived in Europe- I LOVE all the stinky raw cheese!
@babymakes9 and @akoros To add to @jchpg, Listeria can also cause miscarriages due to its ability to cross the placenta. It also has this cool feature of being able to live at both body temp and fridge temps (which makes the microbiologist in me very happy!) I read Expecting Better which had some interesting thoughts on eating lunch meat. I still try to be extra careful with it even after reading her research. I have been searing the outside of the lunch meat in a frying pan to kill the bacteria.
My current dilemma is fresh mozzarella for a caprese. My MIL requested it and it is one of my favorites. It is probably fine, but still may heat it up. Risk averse over here (but more lenient with caffeine and a morning Diet Coke).
@dobiemom11 yes exactly. For me while likely one will not get listeria, the potential outcome is very bad. This for me if the reason to just be careful and avoid the risk. It’s a risk: benefit analysis and for me it’s a small inconvenience that I can specifically control to protect the baby.
Fresh mozzarella is soooo yummy. I totally get the temptation. With DD I had a lot of caprese salads, for lunch- it’s all I could stomach- but I always used the pasteurized stuff. Not as good, but it sufficed.
I really just want ALL the sushi.... but I’ll wait.
@jchpg. I told my husband after this baby comes, I need sushi wrapped in prosciutto for dinner! I gave up prosciutto for Lent (and other things), and then found out we are pregnant right afterwards. But we can do it! (There is sushi you can have and I think if we went to a restaurant, I would order that. But ordering it as takeout or delivery seems a little risky that they screw up your order and give you the wrong stuff. I would be so sad that I think my husband just wants to avoid the disappointed tears).
@dobiemom11 and @jchpg I read that as long as you heat the deli meat up to the point of steaming that it will kill the listeriosis bacteria, so I have been microwaving mine. But there have been listeria outbreaks on all kinds of things, especially produce, and from what I can tell, the longer something sits in your fridge, the greater the chance (still small) that you could contract it. I have been washing everything carefully, and I don’t eat anything like lettuce etc that is not heated and has been sitting in my fridge for a long time. I also won’t eat any sushi even cooked stuff while pregnant because cross-contamination seems like it might be a problem (especially now if you get it as take out). I don’t know if I’m being crazy or not, but I don’t want to take an unnecessary risk. Please correct me if anything I said is wrong!
@dobiemom11 We got sushi takeout for my birthday a few weeks ago..and it was divine! I was missing the Sake, but it definitely hit the spot. I just ordered anything with crab meat, tempura or cooked shrimp, veggies, or a fully fried roll. mmm now I want more sushi

@dobiemom11 oh that sounds amazing! I miss prosciutto so much!
@readermom1 I agree with you, and I do the same. Absolutely, steaming it in the microwave is enough to kill it. It’s nice that this is enough. I also don’t do even the safe sushi bc it has a chance of cross contamination. That being said IF I were eating out at all now (we’re still sheltering in place- so no eating out/take out) I may eat deep fried sushi. I have also been thinking about making it at home and using things I know are safe- it’s not the same and I REALLY want the raw fish, but it would hold me over. The trick is getting a good Japanese mayo and some sauce and making your own sushi rice.
Reading this thread made me do a double take on the tub of little mozzarella cheese balls I've been eating... didn't even cross my mind. Pasteurized. I will admit that I've pretty much kept my same exact diet except for cutting out oysters and alcohol. I still eat salami, prosciutto, and smoked salmon. 🤷🏼♀️ I've looked at a lot of the data and it hasn't really impressed me. I think my risk aversion might be broken having to work in COVIDland hospitals.
@gh1219 I totally get weighing the risks. In the end I think it’s best for everyone to make the best choice for them. I know lots of people who continue as normal with no worry and have had totally normal perfectly healthy pregnancies and babies 😊
@gh1219 With DS, I never knew hotdogs were a no-go and I don’t eat them at all but craved them so bad. I definitely ate quite a few when pregnant before and I’m craving them now but just haven’t done it. I’ve also haven’t had any since 2016 when pregnant with DS lol
I am kind of like @gh1219 I realize the risk is there, but for me it’s so small that I’m willing to take it! I Definitely loosened up once the 2nd trimester hit. I am not eating lunch meat everyday, but on enough occasions. I have had raw tuna from a good sushi spot. I have not had any raw oysters, but i did eat a bite of my husbands rare steak, and i also licked the bowl of carrot cake batter with raw eggs in it! Pre-pregnancy I ate soft boiled eggs pretty often and we made homemade Caesar dressing with raw eggs, but I haven’t been doing that anymore. I just think you yourself have to be comfortable with what you’re doing! Just like everything.
Should I be concerned about fresh mozzarella made with pasteurized milk, though - maybe I missed something? I eat burrata more often than I should probably admit! Lol but it’s made with pasteurized milk so I haven’t been concerned.
honestly on cheese I assumed a lot of the fancier cheeses we get for cheese boards we’re going to be unpasteurized and off limits (even ones i get from a cheesmonger & come from Europe), but I haven’t seen a single unpasteurized cheese to this point!
@shelmcclel I believe if it’s made with pasteurized milk it is considered safe, but I have no authority to say that 🤷🏼♀️
Also in the US it’s illegal to import raw un-pasteurizes cheeses so you will not find it here, unless it’s from a small local place. If you’re into cheese like me, I hope one day you get a chance to taste the REAL stuff- it’s amazing and like nothing I’ve ever found in the US.
In this picture the moldy one in the front is to die for!
